My rig is the following:

Intel Core 2 Duo E7500 @ 2.93GHz Not OC (At stock condition)
XFX Radeon HD 5870
4GB ram DDR2
ASUS P5Q SE
550W PSU
OS: Win8 Pro x64bit
Resolution @ 1920x1080

I had a Radeon HD 4870 and played battlefield 3 (Multiplayer) at less than 30 fps and it usually fell even less than 20, making the game unplayable. My graphics were and still are as low as they can get. I changed my GPU with my brother's Radeon HD 5870 and it's still the same thing. I was thinking of buying the Q9550s for about 250 euros but i'm not sure if this might help my situation.
Will this CPU (that fits my mobo's socket, which is an LGA775) raise me to, let's say, 40 fps EVEN at low graphics?
My goal here is this: To reach playable FPS at battlefield 3 without sudden FPS drops that make it unplayable, no matter the level of graphics. Please tell me your suggestions. Thank you!

spending money on LGA 775 in today's time and age is not wise unless it's practically for free.
you really need to consider a platform upgrade.
Q9550(s) for 250 euros is like $330 US and that is a 3570K and Z77 mobo if you really think about it..

edit:
also a Q9505(s) is stock @ 2.93GHz, it will have to be overclocked extremely high to compensate being older technology.
so also better CPU cooling would be in order, possibly upgrade PSU depending on GPU power consumption along with CPU overclock.

just my two cents.

yeah that's correct but my budget is low and i can't afford to buy a new pc. if i even buy a new mobo the rest gear won't fit and i'll have to buy new ones and that means a new pc, as you said. i was thinking of that specific cpu as my only way out, other than buying a new pc, which i can't.

@ Alain123 the 1GB version

will that q9300 though make my rig reach a playable fps for bf3?

there's a difference between the 9300 and the 9550. Is a 9550 worth the money now, no. Can you get playable frame rates.......... not with a 1gig card ( mentioned above ).

you should seriously consider a platform upgrade. 250 is a lot to pay for dated technology.............. I still use mine with a 2gig 6950 and have played BF3 on line at 1920x1200. It does work but wouldn't waste my money on it.

a lowly quad i5 is much better and it will cost less than 200. figure in 4gigs of ram ( 2-2gig sticks ) and an inexpensive motherboard............. you'll be way ahead of the game.

i was thinking about a pc upgrade but budget wise and time wise it's not efficient. The reason is that because i will go in the army in 1 year and after 1 more year i'll probably go study, so at that point my pc will get old and if i ever start playing games again, i might buy a console. the reason i was thinking about upgrading my cpu is that so i can play bf3 and most modern games to come until my pc becomes very outdated.

it's all unwise bro to invest in 775, what exactly is your budget, you never have stated?

you're right i haven't really 😛 well my current budget is about 250 euros, just for a cpu (which i "might need")

EDIT: I am aware that modifying my 775 isn't a good thing to do but it's one of the most current affordable solutions.

your in the UK, where do you shop from?

i don't live in the UK i live in Cyprus. And the thing is i've found a Q9300 from ebay at about 150 euros, which is a bit strange, but since i live in Cyprus i kind of except it to be.

no most probably because i'm looking for new cpus and not used ones

Core2 Quad Q8200 owner here.

Don't buy the Q9300. It's the same as my processor, with the other 2MB of cache enabled, VT enabled. and small speed boost. With my Q8200 overclocked to 2.8GHz it still sucked in Planetside 2 and that was with the FSB dialed all way up to 1600 from 1333.

Either buy a new system with the cheapest i5, motherboard, RAM (which would be the smartest choice) or buy the cheapest Q9550 (which might accept a small over clock to 3GHz) or Q6600 (which will accept a pretty heafty overclock to 3GHz) you can find.

Keep in mind that even an FX-6300 based upgrade would be smarter than buying a socket 775 processor at this point.

when i find the used cpus i find them being sold as processor only, which means no cooling fans. if i buy a cooling fan (specifically for that Q9300 model) will i be able to attach it easily or do i need some skill in order to apply it? (i'm a bit new with the technical part)

Not really, no.

From the reviews that I have read, the after market HSF units with push pins actually end up being more of a pain in the rear to install than the type with the bracket that goes on the back of motherboard. The bracket type mean taking out the motherboard, but apparently that's less fiddly than mucking with some of the wonky push pin models.

I just bought this one,

in large part due to it's compatibility with all the major socket types, but also because it has a pretty straight forward installation setup. Plate goes on the back, screws go through the holes, you screw it tight, done.

Personally, I don't like the Intel push pin design at all, even on the default Intel coolers. Really have to push the heck out of them some times...

the processors lower than the 9550 won't be as good as the 9550. besides clock speed it has a lot to do with the amount of cache the 9550 has. we still don't know how much vram on the card. if it's 1gig I wouldn't waste my time on a processor.

think about this......... after your tour you're probably not gonna want to "play" army anymore. why don't you shelve it until after you mature?

that's what i thought too but after i mature i don't think i'll want to spend 2000 euros on a top gear pc, at that point i'll just buy a console and get it over with but for now, a console is not an option.

I only payed 60 EUR for my Q9550S but it was used, you should consider buying a used one since it won't be able to hold up a stable FPS on new games anyway... Unless you are trying to overclock it like me.

For less than 100 EUR you can purchase from eBay a Q9650, which is 3.0Ghz at stock, and will overclock to 4.2Ghz with a Cooler Master 212 EVO.

I've built several Q9650 rigs and still own one. It's always been one of my favorite builds. At 4.2GHz, it's still a great gaming performer even when paired with a modern graphics card such as the GTX 770.

A socket 775 quad core CPU is still viable for gaming today, except in those very intensive CPU bound games like Planetside 2 or Arma 3.

You can get a Q9400 or Q9550 or even Q9650 for cheap and if you overclock it a bit, it will perform well.

Also, be sure to upgrade to 8GB or ram. That motherboard is weird, it states it can support 16GB on 4 slots, but I've never seen 4GB DDR2 modules outside of servers.

I have a 4x4GB DDR2 kit in one of my P45 systems and it works fine. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231302&cm_re=ddr2_16gb-_-20-231-302-_-Product
