I changed out my very old E7500 with a q9650 core 2 quad. Window's 10 wont boot up it crashes. I'm able to get into the bios once but on a reboot I just get a black screen. The Pc does post. I've tried all the stuff one trys. I've put in the latest bios and reset the mobo. I know the Cpu works because it runs on another mobo I have but I want it in the p5n-d. Do I need to change a voltage in the bios maybe for the 95watts? Any help would be appreciated as I'm at my wits end. I know the cpu and mobo work because many Over clock it it on ytube all the time.

Most likely problem.
The installation of windows may not know what on earth a Q9650 is and how to deal with it, might be different enough from the E7500 that it needs windows reinstalling.
Do you have a spare HDD to do a test implementation of windows on it?

Well the thing is I've pulled my sata cable and dropped the hard drives so its just the bios. Somtimes it will lock up the bios. Not always but about every other time. Plus it runs windows 10 just fine on the other mobo in another case I have.

But that other machine has it only ever run that CPU? My point was that during installation windows sets itself up for the hardware it can see at that time. If that hardware changes it may or may not work. Going from a Q9550 to 9650 would be OK. dual core to quad maybe not.

But it won't even get into bios. Have you done a bios reset?

Yes I reset the bios. The other mobo had a e7500 in it too. Same 775 socket with ddr3. But it loads straight to windows with the q9650. Unlike the p5n-d. I''ve never had anything like this happen before so you can understand my frustration..lol.. Thanks for trying to help Btw.

4 x DIMM, Max. 8 GB, DDR2 800/667/533 Non-ECC,Un-buffered Memory

  1. You aren't using DDR2. Your board is a DDR 2 board.
  2. This board supports up to DDR 2 800, which means you have to edit the BIOS so that the Q9650 runs at such a multplier that results into a RAM speed of DDR2-400 in BIOS (i.e. DDR2-800 bc double data rate).
RAM screw-up either way.

Q9650 bios 0701+
E7500 bios 0801+

Shouldnt be any reason why the Q9650 doesn't work, even the QX9650 is supported since 0107/0502.

Only 2 things I can think of is maybe there's a physical jumper on the mobo locking it to the 1066MHz and not allowing the full 1333MHz the cpu needs, or it's a proprietary bios such as HP or Sony or Dell which often times have custom bios which do not include certain cpus, since they want you to buy the upgraded models not swap in a cpu yourself.

Well yes I'm using DDR2. But thanks for this it might help me. I havn't checked that the multiplier is set right. I have 4 2 gb sitcks right now. I've pulled 2 thinking its a memory conflict. Whats the best guess on the multiplier setting for 4gb of memory?
