Hi guys question, If I were to get an HP computer, a few years ago I had one but when I went to add a new hard drive it wouldn't work. I was told hp didn't allow hard drives not made by them unless you got an image or something burned on them.

Is that still the case?

it was a long time ago that I had one at least 10 years ago if not more. I wanted to upgrade my hard drive and bought a western digital one, It wouldn't work so I call hp customer service and they said it had to be purchased from them or take to best buy to get an image burned on it. At the time we didn't have a best buy. Wasn't just me I looked it up online and others said the same thing at the time so wondered if that was still the case.

I have not heard of such with their older PC, but have heard rumors about such more recently. I have no personal first hand experience of it, just hearsay.

I will say that every HP laptop I have ever dealt with makes a format and reinstall harder than it should be, but not that another drive wouldn't work. I have swapped several HDD models to SSD over the years.
