Question Question if I could temporarily use a 4070 ti with my old mother board and processor.

My computer is getting rather old.

I built it mid 2016, and it was incredibly fast. It still does fairly well for what it is, but I need to build a new one.

The specs:

ASUS Rog Maximus VIII Formula
Intel i7 6700K
Corsair H115i water cooler
32G DDR4
Sata 1TB SSD
Corsair CX850 M Power supply.
EVGA 1070 GTX FTW

I tend to game in 1080P

My question is, could I run a 4070 Ti in my current set up? In theory, it would give me better performance while I save up the money to buy the components for the new build.

Would appreciate any advice.

Yes you could but it all depends on how long you had PSU for and would 4070ti handle it. But if your going to upgrade soon think you should start off with CPU and motherboard and PSU and then go onto buying new GPU because if your 1070 still doing well then use that temp. Also think you should move from 1080P to 1440P monitor because 4070ti is overkill for 1080P

Thanks for the reply.

It will take me quite a while to save up the money for the components I want. But I'm close to the $800 ish needed for the 4070 ti now. And, I am kind of afraid they are going to become scarce again.

The PSU is a 850 watt ... I'm not using near that much currently. The PSU was purchased in late 2016.

After looking though, I think it only has 2 slots for the 6 +2 PCIE cables though, and the 4070 needs 3 as I understand it.

I'd hate to buy the graphics card(to ensure I get one) and then not use it at all untill I get the new rig built.

I guess I'd have to buy a new PSU too, which I could definitely do, and use it in the old and new build as well.

4070ti will not go up in price because there new GPU are coming soon the super ones but think you should really start from bottum all the way to top because 1070 can be used temp until you save up again. Since your PSU going to be 8 years old next year think you should replace that before buying gpu

If I’m not considering the power supply, though at 8 years old I would consider replacing it. But instead of the $800 dollar 4070ti have you considered getting something like the 4070 closer to $500 and then getting a ddr4 Intel board like a b760 and maybe a 12600k or similar? That way you could reuse your old ram and reuse your ssd. If you parted out your old pc like the board/cpu, you might get almost enough for the new psu.

If you really wanted to stretch the budget, and are from the USA, Newegg.com had the amd rx 6800xt on sale for $449 which should be in the class of the 4070, just not quite as good ray tracing.

On the other hand, that would leave you $350 off the bat for a platform upgrade.
