Question on a Mata Hari Battery Replacement

I have a friend who's Bally Mata Hari needs a battery replacement. I have
already told him that it would need to be "taken off of the board" to
prevent damage.

He only has one pin and relies on my help to keep it running.

My question is this:
Is there a replacement for this game that I can use AA Batteries rather than
installing a replacement one like is already on it? (off the board of
course)
If so, who sells it?
(I have the Pingizmo holders on my pins, but they already work with AA's).
Any insight would be appreciated.

thanks,
Craig

Do I understand that the existing (bad) batteries are original
rechargeables still hard soldered to the board?! Wow.

If you dont want to go the cap route, get a battery holder as suggested
above and just add a diode which effictively disables the recharging
circuitry. This way the batteries wont overcharge and cause any
damage.

You could cut the end that snaps into the battery holder on the WPC pins off
the PinGizmos battery pack and solder the wires from it to the board.

It should work just fine.

John,
My concern is that the Bally recharges the battery, and the current holders
and batteries are not desiged for that.
I am concerned that it would mess up the board and/or the battery by doing
it.

Why waste your time with batteries? Duracells are expensive and if you
forget about them in the game for a while, you're screwed.
I'm putting memory capacitors on all my boards. They are available at Big
Daddy Enterprises online for a couple bucks each.
They are Elna 5.5v 1.0f. If you are not comfortable with punching a hole
into the board to install it, you can use silicon on the back, glue it down
and wire it to each end. Fire up the pin about once a week, let it run for
a while to keep the cap charged, and you are good to go.......as long as the
pin is not in a temperature extreme environment like an attic or garage.
Temp extremes dry up the cap over time.

If you really don't want to order just one cap, and have nobody to chip in
an order with, go to Radio Shack and get an AA battery holder that holds 4
batteries. It will work. The one that held 3 batteries is no longer made.

Mark Schneck of http://www.silverballsolutions.com sold me a Cyclone with
one of these holders installed. Mount it away from the board a few feet and
you should be ok.

Yes, the original replacements are
available here:

Blocking diode is included and installed.

I thought Steve put blocking diodes in the PinGizmos battery doohickey.. I
used them for a long time exclusively and thought I remembered the diode in
the wire down next to the battery pack?

Maybe not though.. I need to see if I still have any games with the
PinGizmos kits and double check...

I just double checked, there are no diodes on Steve's battery packs.

You could install a 1n4004 on Steve's pack and have your blocking diode that
way?

http://www.pinballnews.com/learn/battery.html <-- a good article on making
your own remote pack. I make mine similar to these, but use a 3 AA cell
battery pack and put the diode inline with one of the wires.
