Question regarding ethernet cables.

If my modem/router has slots for 4 ethernet cables to be inserted if desired, would it necessarily slow down my speeds if my brother hooks up another ethernet cable to connect to his computer?

It seems that the wifi speeds are a bit wonky for whatever reason but when I'm connected through ethernet I get the correct amount of dl/upload that our provider gives us.

Wifi will never be as fast as an Ethernet connection. Or as stable

It will slow down if your brother uses a service that eats up all the bandwidth (like downloading a torrent, for example).

But in regular use, no it shouldn't slow down significantly, if at all.

You should always connect through wire when it's easy to do so, of course you share bandwidth with anyone on the network, wired or not.

1. Computers on Ethernet (wired) practically speaking do not matter for the purpose of the INTERNET

2. The INTERNET connection is capped by your ISP plan, so you will SHARE that connection with every other device that uses the Internet (whether wired or wireless)

3. Wonky wireless is a LOCAL issue caused by either:
a) ROUTER
b) Wi-Fi device in the computer (too weak signal, or other problem)

If more than one device has "wonky" wi-fi then the problem is likely the Router. It could be failing, providing a weak signal or you may even have INTERFERENCE from another 2.4GHz device.

So the short answer is it's simply about how much bandwidth each person uses. If you watch Netflix and notice it's not working great then somebody else could be downloading a game or also watching Netflix or whatever.
