Hello there, im new here and recently been thinking of upgrading the ol system. I did some research and it seems the 9800 is really the best 3d card out there for sometime so it seems like a good investment considering its basically just a polished up 9700. So my question is, where can I buy these, when can I buy these, and if the 256 mb version will be released at same time as the 128mb version. Do you think the 256mb version will be considerably more powerful as the 128mb version or what are you thoughts on that. Im not very into latest technology but been doing my research on the newer 3d card technologies and would like some advise, thanks!

The problem with being able to tell you where to buy a 9800, is that I dont know where you live. here in B.C., where I live, 9800's have been out for weeks, but only in the form of 128mb versions. No 256mb versions yet. Though I would like to tell you just to stick with the 128mb 9800, I myself would love to have a 256mb card. I'ts up to U ay.

well, I'm in Montreal and can get the Radeon 9800Pro (128mb version for now :frown: ) and shipping is super cheap (like $15) if you're interested... Anyways, I can get it for CAD$670 (no taxes don't worry  ) so Private Msg me if you like

as for the card's performance - its an incredible card and seriously, there's nothing out there that can even come close - no Nvidia GeForce FX garbage or anything like that (yeah, even the FX 5800)... about the 256mb version - weeelllllll, I can understand the want to grab that one instead, but for now the trend is only slowly moving towards 128mb cards for mainstream PCs, and even the newest of games really only need 64mb (except perhpas the rumor of the new Doom requiring 80mb). If you wish, I can find-out when the 256mb version is coming-out from my distributor, but I can say for sure that it will be a nice chunk of money more for it, so you'll have to weigh-out the benefits with the costs

Error, I understand that the cost of the 256mb card will be substantial, and I totally know that 256mb of freakin memory on your video card is alot ay, but the concept of it is what drives me. 2 years ago I didnt even have 256 megs of system memory. I think it's all good, useless or not.

I live in florida so all about the usa prices and availability. Also I was a bit dissapointed to see how expensive these cards were, i cant believe they are running 400+ now for new top of the line cards. I dont even want to think about 256mb one. Problem I have is with gaming, low fps in particular, no matter what I try it's always laggy. Im sure its my crappy mobo or something but I dont know enough about my computer to really know where to begin fixing it so more ram and new card is only thing I can really do on my own.

Well im thinking I may just pass on buying a card for now, with my current mobo and other hardware i dont think it would be worth the investment. I think ill just wait until some awesome new technology comes out and build a super system then, pci express and DDRII look promising. Maybe in a year or so ill get a slick new pci express mobo and a cheap 3k mhz cpu and toss in a new pci express compliant 3d card and 2 gigs of DDRII *drool* we will have to wait and see i suppose 😀

well like you said low fps can be due to many things - first off, what games, and what kind of hardware are you using ?

Have a 2.53 mhz p4, 1 gig of RDRam, dell machine. Thinking about possibly just upgrading the mobo and getting a 9800 pro after all. Im thinking maybe its a mobo thats the problem. My query now is are there good mobo's out there that support p4 chips, rdram, and 9800 pro's. I really want agp8x board, something real high quality so that I can buy this and a 3d card and really make a big difference with 600 or less bucks. what do you think?

hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, well there are some good AGP 8x mobos out now but hmmm... And with RDRAM, the only chipset thats still supporting it is an SIS R658. Abit makes the SI7, and otherwise i can't even find any other motherboard manufacturers that use it... weird... i mean i know its a new enough chipset, but still. only thing i can say is RAMBUS is out, DDR is in

Error, I ride a Balfa, the most beautiful bike to come out of Canada. It has twelve inches of travel in the rear, and a Monster T up front. To top it all off, I'm a girl. And my pelvis is broken, so I'm practically bedridden.

Yeah, I know that Balfa, used to ride with a guy who upgraded to that one (can't remember the name for the life of me though) last season - nice f#ckin ride, but the Monster T isn't stock is it ? thats a nice suspension too, damn... gurl rider huh? don't see those too often (to top it off not DH'ers), though I used to ride with some XC women couple of years ago but i didn't like all of that up the mountain motion, heh. how d'u break yur pelvis? must suck a$$$ to be stuck in bed - but i know the feeling, two summers ago i messed up my right ankle in a mosh-pit, tore 3 ligaments and sprained 5 (ankle and foot), couldn't move for a while and it still hurts whenever i put too much use on it, heh. but don't worry, always remember, no matter how bad you mess yurself up one of the great things about the human body is it fixes itself - not perfectly but hell, you learn to live with sh!t.
but damn, nice ride... gettin me a new one this season, been ridin on a Giant DH1 for the past 2 (4 1/2" in back, Rock-Shox Judy in front w 4") and i'm startin to not like it anymore  , probably gonna grab a Kona Stinky Pro fram frum a friend (barel 1 month old, he snapped his old one and got a new one, rode it once and then got an Intense (the bottom of the bunch, whats it called again..?) and build up from scratch, hopefully grab a Monster T or a Boxxer, and the rear's already got a Fox Vanilla I think (the one w/ a coil)... hmmmmmm can't wait !
but um, how far is the north shore from vancouver btw? i been thinkin about goin to BC for a week or two at the end of the summer and would love to be able to get there without too much hassle... hopefully m friend'll join me, we've had a plan for the past year now - he's a skier and has position on Whistler's extreme team and can get us up in some backcountry trails by chopper and i've been wantin to jump out of a heli with my ride  heheeeheeheeeeee
