Hello everyone! Please, i need your help

I'm installing a new Heatsink+Fan (Noctua NH-U12P)
on an Asus P8H77-M Motherboard (I got a NM-I115X Mounting Kit) The problem is, i don't know which position it should be. I have a GTX 980 OC and it goes to the 70 - 80 C° ... If i put the Heatsink+Fan horizontal it will take hot air from the GPU into the GPU? i can't put the heatsink in vertical position because when the fan is Vertical it makes weird noises... Also, if i put the heatsink horizontal i don't know where to put the fan, UP or DOWN? Extracting or looking down? Excuse my terrible english

Solved. Thanks :)

Solution

1. That is weird ... usually if you get a fan noise, it's when it is horizontal. Blade assemblies can move a bit along the shaft and when the fan blows in direction of gravity, it can "take off" like a drone. if speed is just right it can 'take off and land" repeatedly making a noise.

I stopped using their fans when Phanteks became the new king of the hill:

a) Replace the fans on a Noctua cooler and temps drop 3C with Phanteks spinning 300 rpm slower.
b) Phanteks is...
1. Testing by heat sink manufacturers showed that having the fans blow back towards the rear of the case provided a 2-3C advantage. The reason was determined to be the orientation of the heat pipes and how gravity affects the process

2. Sometimes your HS may hit cards in the top slot and you will have to rotate to blow upwards .... common on boards that support more than 2 GFX cards.

3. Clean the heat sink With Indigo Extreme Cleaner or the poor man's substitute .... 97% isoprophly alcohol . re[place with Shin Etsu TIM

Its < $4, it's better than anything else except Liquid metal Options and Grizzly's Kryonaut which usually goes for $15.

EDIT: The heap guy no longer has in stock, newegg has it for $5

This isn't an annoying post... I've had this same problem (with different hardware) many times.

I would point the fan so that it pushes the air out the rear of the case (position 2). If this is not possible for whatever reason, I would then recommend pointing the fan so that it pushes the air towards the top of the case. This would heat up the top of the case a little bit, but won't actually cause any real problems. Do not blow the exhaust from the CPU cooler onto the graphics card. There are chips on top of many cards that use the cool air above them to keep from heating up.

This depends. If the heatsink has been used, then you would need to clean off the old paste and apply new. If the heatsink has not been used, the factory applied paste is ready to go, you'd just need to clean the old stuff off of the CPU itself.

Well, as long as the thermal paste on the cooler and the CPU doesn't get contaminated by anything, you can take it on and off without replacing the thermal paste, but you need to be in a VERY clean environment.

Thanks for your answer, i think i'm going with the horizontal position because i have 2 (120mm) fans on the top of the case extracting air and i'm afraid it could hit or be very very close to the GPU if placed vertical.

The thing i don't know is, should the fan be placed down or up of the heat sink?

1.Taking direct air from the GPU and send it to the heatsink and then to the top 120mm fans?

2. Taking the temp from the CPU&heatsink and send it to the top fans?

My noctua fan makes weirds noise when placed vertical, when its placed horizontal its quiet (That's one of the reasons i want to place the heatsink horizontal too)... Do you think if i replace the noctua fan with any Sleave 120mm Fan it will work the same?

The fact that you're using standard sleeve bearings may be part of the problem. I'd go with either long-life sleeve or hydraulic bearings if you're going to be mounting the fan on its side.

Thanks again, for your time...

But, when the fan its just on the top of the GPU (at 70°-80°) by few centimeters extracting air from it and sending it to the heatsink... isn't that bad for the CPU? it won't affect the CPU temp?

Good point... Is the heatsink taller than the graphics card? If the CPU heatsink does not stick out past the edge of the card, it will be getting fresh air. If the CPU heatsink sticks out past the edge of the graphics card, it will be getting the hot air from the card.

However, this problem will occur no matter which way you point the fan. Changing the fan orientation will not protect you from the GPU's heat.

a) Replace the fans on a Noctua cooler and temps drop 3C with Phanteks spinning 300 rpm slower.
b) Phanteks is SCPRs top rated fan on performance / noise ratio
c) Phanteks are much cheaper
d) Phanteks fans ain't fugly :)
e) With Phanteks PCB, you can control up to eleven 3-pin fans off a single PWM header...or 6 fans off a DCV header. This gives you all of the benefits of PWM control with none of the disadvantages of PWM (hum / clicking at low speeds / expense)

2. Think about this.... you bought the big majunga (it's a technical term) aftermarket heat sink because you felt that the stock one wasn't good enough ... you did not buy aftermarket coolers for your GPU cause they were not a concern. But now... you are gonna take all the heat from your 250 watt GFX card and use that to cool your 95W TDP CPU ? If you are trying to get rid of 95 watts (125 OCd), I wouldn't start by pushing all that air preheated by 250 watts of GFX card heat thru the heat sink intended to cool the CPU.

3. Remember, you already lost 2-3C by rotating it horizontal because of loss of heat pipe inefficiencies.

If you can mount it vertically w/o hitting anything that's the way to go. If the football team that you are rooting against is trying to get the win with a last second field goal ... whether they miss by an inch or 40 feet, you still win the game.

I feel you (pun incoming)... I can't feel anything in my left hand.

I always feel left behind on these forums because I'll type a response that would have gotten the Best Answer, but someone else will have said the exact same thing but typed it faster.

Yeah, I did a stupid on that thread.

I thought it was semi modular. I guess I should have read the specs xD
