Im about to buy a 7700k and a Z270M MSI Mortar board which holds up to 64gb DDR4 and OC memory up to 3800mhz. Stock freq. is 2400 and 2133mhz. Im trying to figure out what route to take...

1. Are 8Gb sticks still recommended in 2017, (instead of using 16gb sticks)?

2. What frequency RAM should I get? Im usually one to go the bang for buck route but I do want the RIGHT stuff for this build..

Solution
You dont need 32gb for gaming. You just need 16gb (2x8gb) sticks.

Intel CPUs do not require high speed RAM. There will be no noticeable difference between 3200mhz vs 2666mhz. I would go with whatever is cheaper. I have GSkill series V and a 7700K and they run like a dream.

1. What is not recommended is ever installing a single stick in a dual channel MoBo.

if ya want 16 GB use 2 x 8GBif ya want 32 Gb, 2 x 16GB is recommended over 4 x 8GB

2. The price bump for increasing RAM speeds has been pretty flat for up to 3200 ... after 3200 it gets pricey. For 16Gb of sumthin decent

2133 - $129
2400 - $122
2666 - $126
3000 - $130
3200 - $140
3333 - $163

As far as impact of the faster speed or more RAM, I can prove whatever you want simply be selecting the game. Some games benefit for 16 GB over 8GB some do not ... some games benefit from faster RAM some do not.
