So I am going to be buying a new PC, and this time I am going all out, its been a long time since I have upgraded, and have been running an i5 6500p for too long, CPU maxing 100% not running well in games, making me stutter.

This is the current system I have built on PCPartPicker, now there are some things missing which I require some thought and help on.
https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/dgGjcx

I have gone for a Phanteks case as looking at other builds it looks fairly nice and spacious, I was going to get all Phantek fans + Liquid CPU cooler but Phanteks liquid cooler does not have a LED screen on it, I know alot of people are against the whole LED and RGB but as im going all out I might as well, but should I get a branded Liquid cooler with LED and pair it with the same branded fans also for the case?
Regarding the Fans some of them say "reversed" what does this mean, do I need reversed or not? at the moment I have selected the normal Phanteks RGB fans on my part list.
Now for the RAM i have chosen the Corsair ddr5 6500, in terms of this is other Ram better? should I choose maybe Teamgroup T-Force delta ram over corsair? or not.

The part I have struggled with a little bit is what Motherboard I should get, im looking at getting the i7 14700K, and would like the motherboard to somewhat include most functionality and the best functionality, but what brand and what motherboard would be good?

No GPU selected yet, although I will be perhaps thinking of getting the 4070.

If someone could help me out that would be great. Also will be needed NVME Storage, maybe 2 for the Motherboard?

Here is some inspirational builds i have been interested in:

I would skip the sleeved cable extensions, instead would opt for custom length sleeved cables from the PSU to your devices. Avoids the added cable length and a much more cleaner look, IMHO. Also I sleeve my own cables, and you don't need to stow cables in nooks or crannies.

I would've opted for a DDR5-6600MHz ram kit instead of the one you've picked out. Your listing is devoid of a CPU cooler are you recycling an older one or have you left that open for suggestions from us? I tend to go for a smaller capacity SSD for the OS, app's and launchers while a larger SSD acts as the game library. If the system is meant for content creation, then a mechanical drive to house all finalized projects.

Speaking of suggestions, you need to include the max budget you have for your build and the remaining parts that are meant to go into your build. You're also asked to mention the purpose of this build and the titles/app's you'll be taxing the system with.

You're asked to stylize your thread with info asked of in this thread;
as of this moment, we only know of your location.

Approximate Purchase Date: This Week

Budget Range:
£1500/£2000 ( As my current PCPartPicker list is already at £1000 without the GPU and Storage or CPU Coolers etc.

System Usage from Most to Least Important: Gaming mainly, Surfing the internet, watching streams, sometimes some work on Excel.

Are you buying a monitor: No ( I will do this after as its not as important atm, although I will be looking to buy 144Hz monitors )

Parts to Upgrade: N/A

Do you need to buy OS: Yes
Please note that if you're using an OEM license of Windows, you will need a new one when buying a new motherboard.

Preferred Website(s) for Parts:
Amazon, Newegg, I use PCPartPicker to find cheapest place sales...

Location: UK

Parts Preferences: I would prefer Intel, ( looking at the I7 14700K, I like the Phanteks NV5 ATX Mid Tower Case also )

Overclocking: Maybe in the future (Never done it before)

SLI or Crossfire: No

Your Monitor Resolution: 1920x1080 will probably stay same but change Hz as i have 2 x 60hz monitors.

Additional Comments: Window all the way round, so I can see in, would like to colour scheme with RGB lighting, so fans etc to have RGB on, preferably quieter than loud.

And Most Importantly, Why Are You Upgrading: Current PC is old, very outdated, cant even run COD without getting 15FPS, CPU Maxes at 100% and stops my microphone from working, stuttering etc.

Include a list of any parts you have already selected with descriptively labelled links for parts.

Systems i like the look of currently;

Sorry my bad, I have posted above the template, also the Link to the parts I have at current, I need a CPU cooler, but I would like one with a LED display, but Phanteks don't do a display, so would it be better to change all the individual fans from Phanteks to the same brand as the CPU cooler with a display on?

Not sure what RAM would be better, or if the one I selected is fine?

Not sure on what fans need to be bought as reverse or normal

Not sure what Motherboard to go for, but would like a brand that is well known for good functionality and looks good in the system.

Ideas of current systems I like:

Reverse fans tend to have lower CFM and static pressure than the same fan without a reverse blade design. If you're pursuing aesthetics, then it's reverse blade for the side of there adjacent the motherboard tray.

If you're going to stick to 1080p displays, you're spending an awful lot of money behind the build. You can get away with a RTX4060/4060Ti. Your platform can do 4K though you will need to go with a beefy discrete GPU like the one listed below.

2 SSD's, AIO on the side where the motherboard tray is. The 3pack fan will go to the top as exhaust. The rear fan placement is intentionally left as is, to see how your temps are at first go. If you want to experiment, you can pick up on more fan for the rear.

As for the cables, I ditched them, in favor of a custom length kit made by https://www.pexonpcs.co.uk/ these guys. I personally use MDPC-X gear and have nothing bad to say about them, top notch sleeving. You should get in touch with them lovely folks and see if they can make a custom harness/kit for your PSU. Maybe reach out to them now and ask if they can get a head start with your PSU...? But I'd wait to see what the rest of the community have to suggest about your build.

Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for this.

what do you mean by the monitors, should i use different monitors than 1080p?
as for the CPU cooler, is it better being on the top? most builds I see are placed on the top of the case, also would buying the same separate fans in the same brand as the cooler be easier? keeping the fans to the same brand or not.
Good idea on the sleeving, just need to know what colours I want, I want to keep the colours neutral so they go well with most of the RGB lighting id choose.
Is there any more GPU alternatives, just for aesthetic reasons and the scheming.

Thanks for the reply and your input, I think I still am leaning towards a black build, I have made another PCPartPicker, and have a few questions I will post below.

I have made another Build, but it is missing a few things i currently need help with. I have chosen to go with the Lian-Li HyrdoShift cooler, and have chosen to get the Lian-Li SL-Inf fans to match the cooler, will these fans all fit in the Phanteks NV5 ATX Mid Tower Case if i still choose to get these case rather than a Lian-Li case? Also the 3 fans, and the 2 single fans do i buy them all in reverse?

A few more questions:

  • Still struggling on what GPU to get, id like a sort of Black looking GPU, and perhaps one with the 3 fans on.
  • Struggling on what Motherboard to get which will offer full functionality and looks, Which brand is better, Gigabyte, MSI etc. What functions are needed on it, I would like one with BIOS Flash and a fair few USB ports.
  • As for the SSD, I have put in a Samsung 990 Pro 2 TB NVME, my current build has a 1TB Crucial P5 which I could take from that and have as my Windows Drive, assuming no issues having 2 different branded NVMEs? (Would be Wiped and freshly installed into my new build with the new 2TB)
  • Will I benefit with the 2 x 32GB 6600 Ram rather than 2 x 16GB?

Here's another option to have a look at. This case has excellent airflow and is a dream to build with, especially if using an AIO. Replace the 140mm exhaust fan that's included with this case with the 140mm ARGB fan down below if you desire the full effect.

Looking to buy this ASAP, maybe while Black Friday is on.
You need reverse fans any time you want the ARGB show side to be shown is the same direction of the flow of air the fan produces. In your case I believe you would want 4 reverse fans for the intake of the case and then 3 normal fans to push the air out of the case on the AIO as an exhaust and the extra 1 as an exhaust as a normal fan. This completely depends on your preferred direction of airflow for the case. As for the size of the fans you would need, you are getting a 360mm AIO so so that would be 3 120mm fans for exhaust. I am not sure of the intake fans, but I know they are 120mm or 140mm.

I highly recommend getting cheaper RAM as you are overpaying by about 120+ for that kit at that speed. Get the 4070 ti super or the 7900 XTX. The difference would be whether or not you care about DLSS, and RT because the XT and XTX from AMD are faster in rasterization performance. You would also not want to get the older model version of the corsair PSUs as they lack the connector for the graphics card without having to use the provided ugly adapter. Let me make a link that would have the correct fans and the preferred parts. How many USB ports do you need/want? Put OS and any non-game programs on the lower capacity 1tb P5 drive, and use the 2tb 990pro for games and mass storage. You may benefit from 64bg of RAM over 32gb in the long run, but probably not for a while.

This is how I would do it if 8 rear USBs are enough:

Can I get DDR5 6600 Ram in 32gb? 2 x 16?
you have done 5x single fans, is this better than getting the 3 pack and then the singles as ill need 3 fans on the back front of the case.
I guess if I need more USB ports I can get a splitter? Just wondering is ASRock motherboards OK? do they have many problems compared to more known Brands like MSI, and is the functionality of the BIOS and features still good?
Is there any other motherboard options to choose from if so what would those be?
Looking to buy some of these parts during black Friday sale if there is any sales on them.

That DDR5 kit of RAM I chose will have lower latency than any available DDR5 6600 M/Ts kit I have seen.

PCPP does not have a 3 pack of that particular fan.

The fans I chose all match including the AIO.

Asrock motherboards are as good as any other brand. They have all standard features at similar price points to other brands.

There are several motherboard options at a similar price point, though this is my recommendation.

There's really no reason to not go 7200 CL34 when getting RPL as the prices have gone down quite a bit and it should just run. Generally speaking I prefer having two drives just to split OS and games though it shouldn't make a huge difference one way or the other (so if you wanted to save money this would be a place). I did opt for a 1TB primary drive as below that tends to start having some lower performance characteristics. I'd suggest against getting Kyronaut Extreme as it's pretty widely known for drying up unless of course you like the idea of changing pastes (Arctic pastes are designed with longevity in mind).

AMD would likely give you more performance/$ for rasterized performance, but nvidia has far superior ray tracing and currently much better upscaling. The superior ray tracing is not something that will change for the better over time but the upscaling might. Assuming you want to hold onto the video card for a while I think nvidia is currently just a better choice even though I wouldn't be excited about giving them money right now.

Motherboards are largely a tossup so long as they have decent VRM and all of the features you're looking for. I've had good luck with both Asus and MSI recently (Asus W680 and MSI Z890) so I tend to look towards them first.

While the Lian-li fans and AIO do have a very distinctive look these are adding significant cost to your overall build. Personally speaking I'd start ditching these before dropping performance if the budget cannot be stretched, but I do understand aesthetics being important. The bottom front fan is unlikely to do much of anything from a performance standpoint so potentially that's a place to save money.

You could also drop down to an 850W PSU safely with this build as another place to cut some cost.

Thanks,

Would you choose that motherboard over something like the ROG Strix, more pricey, i think about £299, whats the difference?

I do actually have a 1TB NVME in my PC now I could wipe and use, then get an additional NVME meaning I eliminate having to buy another NVME, its a "931GB Crucial CT1000P5SSD8" and is the Western Digital NVMEs good speeds compared to say Samsung.

Assuming the 2 x 16GB 7200 Ram would be plenty enough?

I agree with the aesthetic part and going with performance first, im just really set on the CPU Cooler and the display...

I also like the Case, although would it be better off getting one where the PSU compartment is hidden and putting fans underneath? or not necessary, and really then id only need 1 single fan for the back, 3 fans for the side part and then the CPU Cooler would be on the top? leaving space for one more fan on the bottom if needs be?

Right now there aren't 32Gb DDR5 IC so anything above 24GB modules are highly limited in maximum performance. You could go with 2x 24GB if you want to be more safe longevity wise without losing performance.

Something like this would work: TEAMGROUP T-Create Expert 48 GB (2 x 24 GB) DDR5-7200 CL34 Memory

This would be a decent drive to have games and applications on, but a newer drive would be better for OS as the controllers have improved some.

The SN850X is the best of the earlier PCIe 4.0 drives and is still comparable with the 990 Pro and P44/P41 Pro. You really can't go wrong with the SN850X/990 Pro/P44 Pro/T500/P41 Pro for primary drives as they're all in the same performance category I just picked the cheapest of those at the time.

I think cases are the most subjective part of any build, and so long as there's sufficient airflow I think anything is fine. The NV5 is a good case I'm just not really a fan of side intake (they do still work fine) as you lose the velocity benefit of the intake fans and are reliant on your back exhaust fan and radiator. There is also the option of using the radiator on the intake, but then you're feeding the warm air to the GPU and since you mentioned gaming this is less than ideal. There are certainly better cases out there with regards to cooling, but the case is something you have to see all of the time unless you have it hidden away so I think liking how it looks is important.

This is a really hard question to answer because of how good pretty much all motherboards have gotten once you hit that mid range segment. It becomes mostly about specific features you're looking for and aesthetics than anything else unless you're doing some serious overclocking.

Comparing the Strix Z790-F to the Z790 Tomahawk looks like mostly a tie between the two features wise with the Asus board having higher supported memory speeds and MSI having more USB ports. A more price comparable (to the Strix) MSI board would be the Z790 Carbon WiFi II which has an optional PCIe 5.0 M.2 port (this shares lanes with the primary PCIe slot so it would run at x8 instead of x16 if the M.2 was used), the same memory support and better power delivery.

I think design and company familiarity also come into play on the motherboard side of things due to how good most boards just are. Asus does tend to charge more at every point features wise so if you were to look at a pricing scale you basically have ASRock < MSI = Gigabyte < Asus.

Features to price ratio is usually Asrock>Gigabyte=MSI>ASUS. They all generally have offerings from top to bottom too.
