On the system I just built with a sapphire 9800pro there are two listings under device manager: radeon 9800 pro and radeon 9800 pro - secondary. Is this normal? Also when I boot into windows i get a message about use with a tv even though the computer is hooked up to a monitor, when I go into the settings the TV connection is already disabled.

Also in the main display settings, I have a choice of two monitors, 1 or 2, 2 is the secondary. Why is this?

The secondary is for a second monitor or TV if you ever decide to use it. Everything is as it should be. That annoying popup, you can uncheck and it will not return.

thanks, again. One other problem. The SMARTGART will not allow me to set any agp speeds, everytime i set it to 8x and reboot it reverts back to off. Any ideas?

Is your mobo 8X capable? I will say that I had the same thing when I first put my card in. A while later I was back in smartguart and it changed no problem. It really is a non-issue as it will not impact your perf, anyhow.

Yeah i have an asus k8v which is capable of running in 8x. One thing I have not done is install the VIA 4in1 drivers because from experience they did not do anything for performance. Would installing these fix the problem? I'm not sure if they include an AGP driver.

Definitely upgrade to the newest chipset & mobo drivers.

Yes you need to at least install the AGP drivers before you will get full functionality. Intel boards are good to go, but AMD based solutions require agp mobo drivers.

Download at least the AGP drivers, but I would recommend the Hyperion 4-in-1 drivers (I have no problem with them), and yes the 4n1 do have the AGP in them, but if you want you can download just the AGP drivers.

Don't bother trying to get it to work...8X does nothing for a 9800Pro anyway.

While it doesn't do much most of the time, there is the very rare time it offers some improvement, but none the less it doesn'thurt performance so why not if you've got it?

My R9600Pro is at 8X too, not that I expect it to do any good, but it can't hurt.

I never thought about it that way. The only use I can think of 8x is with Doom3 and a 128MB card--some textures will need to be stored in RAM...the extra bandwidth will be needed.
