Why is there such a viewing difference between a 15.6" & 17" laptop screen? (Desktop icons & content on a web browser are much smaller on the bigger laptop than the smaller one.)

Icons are a fixed number of pixels in size . When a screen has more pixels they appear relatively smaller .

Which version of windows do you have? It is possible to change icon size

I have Windows 10. I just wanted to know why I had to zoom in so much on a 17" to view a webpage than on a 15" laptop.

Because they have different resolutions. There are far more pixels on the 17" screen, so everything will appear to be smaller. Both resolution and icons sizes should be adjustable, but your native resolution is going to look much better than going back to a smaller resolution. You can however click on the desktop to move focus there, press Ctrl and scroll your mouse wheel to adjust the size of the icons if you wish.

If viewing webpages is the problem, or you have trouble with small text and if overall looks are not as important as viewability, then you can decrease the resolution. Do you know what your current resolution is? You can right click the desktop and select display settings to find out.

The Ctrl+scrollwheel works to instantly change browser zoom as well in most cases.

For viewing txt on webpages
hold down the CTRL key and scroll with the mouse wheel .
That will expand or shrink TXT to any size you like
