It will be connected to Router with DD-WRT and mostly will be connected by USB caddy.

Sometimes will use it as a portable disk.

Searching for something quiet, because it's gonna be connected to router on the night, and I really like silence in the night.

It can be normal 2.5" HDD or portable 2.5" (it will be even better, because i won't need to buy caddy for normal 2.5" HDD)

Can you recommend me something that is not WD RED (they are too expensive)?

Thanks for reading!

A 5400 RPM drive will probably be a little quieter. If your router only has USB2 connectivity, you won't see any performance difference. To maximize performance, allow the router to format the drive. Don't use NTFS (windows) formatting "just in case" you want to read the disk on a Windows box. Windows file system is usually slow and buggy on routers.

If you are trying to stream video, you will probably disappointed. For casual shared storage it might be OK but I bet you will be underwhelmed by performance.

Just as a reference, FreeNAS asks for a minimum of 4GB and prefers 8GB - done properly, NAS takes a lot of RAM to remain responsive.

Unfair comparison I know - FreeNAS is much more feature-rich. Anyway - what size do you need? If it's not too large, as others have said an SSD sounds (or doesn't if you get my drift) like the way to go.

I tell a lie (shouldn't work from memory) it's 8GB minimum /16GB recommended, not 4/8

As I said in my first comment - it's an unfair comparison, but it does give an indication that NAS can need more headroom than you'd think. We've built several as backup devices including the one in our office with something like 12TB of available storage using FreeNAS' own RAID array setup.

I'd still suggest an SSD, but you haven't said how much data you need to store?

If you had a Synology, you would be much happier. The hardware and OS are optimized for NAS. But a Synology is more expensive.

Finally an answer for my question 😀.

Its 7200RPM, does 5K1000 will be more quiet? It will be big difference in noise? Because of course 7200RPM will be faster than 5400.

Thanks for help :).
