Just recently bought a new computer rig

with QX9650
ASUS P5E - Deluxe
4 GB Corsair Dominator PC8500
Zalman 9700 Cooler
ram fan
North bridge fan

and 2 * HD4870's

in an ANtec 900 case btw

but the temp of the QX9650 is really high for some awkward reason

i have 2 cores that idle at 50C
and 2 cores that idle at 41C

my QX9650's VID is about 1.23

i tried to reset my Zalman cooler 3 times but it all worked out the same

is this QX9650 a piece of crap?
paid so much for it
and my Q6600 ran cooler even at 3.2Ghz

what can i do to OC this QX9650?
i read reviews this thing can go to 4.0Ghz with ease
but seems like they were wrong...

1st what are the temps in the room the PC is in?? 2nd are you sure you that you are have the cooler set right??? i have always had problems with the push pins. could not get them in and would have high idle temps like you are talking about. that is why i will not use a cooler that dose not have a base plate so i know that the cpu cooler is down correctly and tight.

You sound like you know what you are doing so i hope my suggestions did not make you mad but this is all i can think of. let me know how you make out and what you find problem to be because you should be able to get 4ghz or more out of that chip. and i am wanting to get this cpu my self..

Even the slightest mess up, like a pin in the wrong place or something can make a lot of heat. Try to take out the processor, check all the pins and put everything back carefully and see what happens.

haha
im sure i have the cooler set right
this cooler uses a base plate and not pushpins so the tightness shouldnt be a problem

the thing i am uncertain of is probably how much thermal paste i applied
at first i applied just a thin line
ended up with 50 50 41 41

then i applied a thick generous line of thermal paste and ended up with the same temps

the third time i basically put a thick layer of it on the CPU
and still the temps were the same

what other factors could casue this?

this is the first time i have ever used the Dominator RAM fan
could that be the problem?

im just using the thermal compound that came with the Zalman 9700 cooler

the SUper ZM-STG1

can anybody tell me wuts a normal temperature for he qx9650?

and is 1.23 VID a bad one?
i searched online the range is supposed to be from 0.85 and up!!

You are aware that this is an extreme edition processor. And, that it has higher TPD of 130 Watts as opposed to a Q6600 with only 95 Watts? So it will run hotter.
