no of course not.. it depends on what your talkin about

shaders? R3x0 powns. other stuff? meh.. im sure the 5900ultra is better at something other than pure bandwidth i just havent researched it

Ive had the fortunate situation of having used both the R9700pro and R9800pro

And the R9800pro is noticably faster.
Though thats mostly due to the increased core and memory speeds.

There were other optimizations with AA and ANSIO but their effects were minor.

it's a tough battle between the two!
wonder if any of both companies would gain a huge leap sometime.

i really can't decide between a 9700 pro and a 9800 pro cause i have a 5200 which runs fine.

Well if you can find one, get a sapphire or herculies or ATI R9700pro.

You get 90-95% of the performance of a R9800pro at a much lower cost.

The issue being is that they are allready becomming rare in stores.

If you dont mind paying top dollar for top performance then get the 9800pro (or the 5900ultra).

though i kinda recommend against the 256mb R9800pro... whole load more price for virtually nill perforamnce gain.

It doesn't look that way. They are both developing for the same technologies at the same time. This is an advantage of everyone engineering for Direct X, MS tells them what features they need to support, and even if both companies do it different ways, the result is about the same. Both companies are also dealing with the same RAM technology and the same die process availability, which limits them to roughly the same memory bandwidth and GPU speed.

Large jumps only occur when a company falls behind.

did Nvidia or ATI forget about opengl? why always microsoft, though many games are written in Opengl.

Kinda remembering the leap from Radeon 8500 to 9700.
Thank God! Nvidia was able to come back.

OpenGl is still being developed, but its an 'open' standard and is supported by more than just microsoft.

And microsoft would love to make it obselete.

What a hell of a jump. The biggest jump since people started tryin' out those newfangled Voodoos back in the day!!! How about this: Going from a Trident Blade 8mb to a Radeon 9800 Pro? BIG jump. That's what's on my plate. (Well, I actually had a short stint with the 9600 Pro in my dad's office computer, while I still wait for my 9800 Pro)

nVidia cheated on me so I left her for ATi. ATi's hotter anyway...

That jump was caused by ATI skipping a product cycle by working on the card for the next cycle...early.

ATI skipped another product cycle when they launched the 9800 on a rev. 2 9700 core instead of releasing the new .13 micron core they had planned. But this one was probably more due to financial reasons, "milking the cow" on the current technology.

R360 could be the final product based on the R3.xx core.
SO 0.13 will be for R420.

Yes, well, ATI was supposed to release the 9800 with a few more specification enhancements, such as .13 micron process, higher clock speeds, DDR-II 1000, etc. They released a comprimised product in order to get it out the door earlier, and beat the 5800. Then they delayed the product they were supposed to have released last spring until fall, to save money (argument over last and next, I don't mean the spring of last year, I mean our last spring).
