R42X to support DDR, DDR][ and GDDR3

The Inquirer is Saying that ATI is going to cover all their bases on the next gen cards with support for all three memory types to allow greater flexibility.

The NV 40 is stated as having support for DDR and GDDR3 (no mention of DDRII)

So it looks like none of that exotic GDDR3 for the ATIs until a later date. Rumours have it that the high-end NV40s will have it from the get-go.

There is a top of the line 9800 with DDR2. Its been around for a long while now too. Its the Radeon 9800 Pro 256mb version. However its memory is only clocked 10mhz faster then the DDR1 9800 Pro 128mb version, but where I am costs more then $200 more for an extra 10mhz and an extra 128mb of ram that have little to no effect.

But now they are talking about GDDR3!

I mean it's like 3 times better! And they're talking about it NOW!

AND, And, and..... well, yeah it sux that it won't be on the first card and may be only on the nVs, but they are thinking about it even if they are being too stingy to give it to us.

Hey, what do you want? If it were up to me they have 512mb of 512bit ram running at 512mhz.

yea, but DDR2 was supposed to have twice the bandwidth as DDR or something..

like the same as comparing SDR to DDR.

i know there was an nvidia card with it too, but it was just used as regular DDR with a high clock

It stands for Graphic Double Data Rate 3.
Next gen memory specially made for video card...

Are you going to be one of the first ones to buy a GDDR3 card?
Depends on what is offered as the PCI-EX solutions. Likely my next purchase will be a slightly more long term thing than my recent purchases (last until probably 6mths+ after DX10 comes out depending on what that offers).

If the R423 or RV380 come out with GDDR3, then yes I will get it ASAFP. Some of it will depend on what the early reviews have to say. If BBA is a fine product, then I will be able to get it early/quickly from their online store, but if some other GOOD (like not PC or GeXpuke) OEM-partner makes a far better board (like they DO put GDDR3 on it or VIVO) then I will have to wait until one of those hit the local stores before I can get one (which would likely be a week or two after others. Casual CAT ordered his R9600P before me, but due to customs BS for him, I got mine before anyone else.

All will be answered in due time, I'm sure.

Like labbby said, plus here's a press releases from ATI (the co-creator of the GDDR3 spec). According to their literature from 2002 it was expected to arrive last year, but as we all know it didn't REALLY materialize except for as mock-ups at expos.

There's also some good info here at Thom's, it is rather basic, but does an ok job of explaining the situation quickly.
