You have two seperate issues in that one statement. Has ATI lost a pile of customers to the 7800? Probably not when you consider that most people cant spend $600.00 on a video card. Has ATI lost a pile of customers that belong to this market segment? I think that they most likely have. Can they turn this around? Of course they can.

I agree with mozzartusm, even thought the market segment is small relative to the others, nV is currently going to dominate unopposed for every dollar of those sales, which constitute a nice 'high margin' segment.

While only a few people may buy and Aston, Maybach, Rolls or Bentley you still try and outdo the competition to get the lion's share of that small but lucrative market.

And while people build now, every month that there isn't a competing part to chose, there's a large number of potential consumers that are lost.

They can make it up in the mainstream market, but the thing that gets mindshare is the top-end product which has a huge influence on the mid-range. If nV launched a GF7007SE that performed worse than a GMA900 they could likely still sell it to many customers simply because it could be associated with the #1 card on the market. That's the power of the top spot.
