R9 280 vs GTX 960

The 280 is *slightly more powerful at 1080p.

Overall, whichever is cheaper.
For the price of higher end 960s, you can get a 280x however.

Giving more information is almost always helpful. What are your other specs? For example the 960 works better with weak CPUs in some games, but it's not a problem if you have an i7.

Either way, wait a week, AMD is announcing at least a few cards and prices could change.

if budget is an issue wait until a cple weeks and the newer amds are launched prices for the 960s will probably drop a long with the non flagship amds

Definitely the GTX 960, which is a great card for 1080p gaming, as it even outclass the R9 280 or in some games it performs on par if not better with R9 280X. Check these videos:

Having said that AMD is coming up with its new 300 series cards, most of them will be released with in this month, starting June 16, 2015. See if they offer any thing substantial than the GTX 960 at the same or less price point. If not you can very well go for the GTX 960.
