MultiGPU setup will have issues especially if you pre order games you will find it usually takes time to get it running smooth, but in games it does work for the performance will be better then a single 980.It also depends on your psu if you can cf 280x's.

The 980 is expensive, if you are just gaming at 1080p I would suggest a 970.

I have a GTX 980 ATX SC in my HTPC (long story that). I wouldn't suggest anything over it as is. I also have a Titan and 290x, for comparison of what I mean there.

SLI has the same issues as Crossfire

To answer your original question, (since nobody else did) two r9 280X cards will be more powerful than one GTX 980. However, as they HAVE pointed out, some games do run into multi GPU issues. (this is less of an issue than it used to be)

Since you are now considering a GTX 970... Two R9 280Xs have much more power than one GTX 970.

and as to your SLI question...SLI runs into the same problems as Crossfire.

Since you already own one 280X, you would get the most performance for your money by buying another 280X.

A 7990 is going to come in right about the level of the GTX 690 in this chart. Did you know that AMD did not update their Crossfire driver profiles for four months recently, an eternity in the gaming world. No, Crossfire and SLI do not have the same problems to the same extent.

Here's a recent article about SLI:
