Paired with an 8 core AMD cpu, I'd like to play games at ultra, 60+ FPS at 1080p. I'm thinking the 2gb ram won't be good enough for future games as BF4 uses 2.2gb, though the free games look like a good deal!

Hi and welcome to the forums!

Firstly both cards take blows in different games and both perform relatively close, it comes down to a few things, fanboyism, price and game compatibility. Both can play 1080p 60+ FPS ultra

Best to keep AMD with AMD, so getting the R9 280X is probably the best option, with the higher GDDR Vram, it has a better chance of handling games for linger compared to the GTX 770. BF4 runs off an AMD engine, thus making the R9 280X perform better, lots of modern day games are using mantle making AMD a better choice for current games now, as they have the better drivers achieving better performance. Through all this, get the R9 280X, it suits you better.

I suggest you go with a GTX 770. It's just that I owned both AMD and Nvidia and in my opinion I think Nvidia looks out for their drivers more than AMD does. Also I'm not pleased with AMDs noise! Apart from that though I've done some benchmark research and with the GTX 770 you'll get a higher framerate. Also if you want a perfect non-reference GTX 770 check the following link: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125462

Different people have different opinions, many favour both platforms, it comes down to what you like best. AMD cards may/not be noisy depending on the card you get, it is preferable you get an aftermarket cooled model like Asus/Sapphire/MSI and Gigabyte Rev 2.0 Coolers ONLY, Rev 1.0 has major issues with heat dissipation.

I've been in the same spot as you, it all goes down on what is the price in your country. The 280x is sky high in price in the USA due to cryptocoin mining. If you want to run games such as Battlefield 4 id suggest going with the 280x because it supports mantle. Since AMDs tend to run a bit hotter if you go with an aftermarket cooling solution like Asus's DCUII top edition you will run really cool and really silent. Since you have and AMD cpu id stay with the same brand. If you also plan your graphics card to be more future proof take the 280x. It has more memory and more stream cores. So it is also better when it comes to computing. It is true though that Nvidia cards tend to have better driver support. They both perform similarly in most of the games, having only about 5 fps differences. It also depends on which games you play, and what manufacturer the game favors more. Some games are AMD built and some tend to prefer Nvidia. I personally chose the r9 280x since it is cheap in my country. And it is cheaper than the 4 Gb version of the 770. What games are you going to play?

This is a tough decision that I recently had to make, and I went with the R9 280X. I kept an eye out for sales, and I paid $299.99 for the HiS R9 280X Turbo Boost edition, which is around the market price of what a R9 280X should be.

I've only had it a couple days, so I can't give a full review, but I am happy with my purchase. The R9 280X were not shipped with reference coolers at all, I believe, so noise should not really be an issue. With a decent vendor-cooling solution, heat isn't an issue either - mine hardly goes above 60C when gaming, and that is with the 1050mhz boost.

Performance aside, the two big deciding factors for me that tilted me towards the R9 280X was the extra RAM, and Mantle. People will argue that Mantle is niche, but in the games it supports, it will help my AMD-based rig. More games will support it in the future. If DirectX happens to expand on this concept in the future - good! Still no loss for me.

As for some of the other minor features that are nice, like video-recording software and easy game optimization, those can be treated as equal. Nvidia may have the convenience of having Shadowplay and game-optimization under one program, but using MSI Afterburner and AMD/raptr's "Gaming Evolved" isn't too much different. (Admittingly, I don't care for raptr.)

All this said, pick whichever one you're willing to pay for. Both are great products. The R9 280X may be better for your AMD-based rig, though.

It really depends on the games you play. Mantle is supposed to be the next big thing so if you play games that currently support mantle or are planning to play games that will then go with the R9 280x. PhysX and shadow play are cool Nvidia features if you play/want to play games that support Physx and if you are into streaming. I would just get the cheapest one which is the R9 280x (newegg.com) just buy one with an aftermarket cooler. Also the R9 280x comes with 3 free games right now so that is something to consider. I am an Nvidia fan boy buit for that price point I think the R9 280x is a better option.
