[SOLVED] R9 280X With 3440x1440 Monitor

Hi guys, I recently bought a monitor that's an ultrawide (3440x1440 165hz). I mainly game CG:GO lately. But now I'm thinking my pc won't be able to support it mainly due to the GPU. Would it be able to do so? It's an old R9 280X that I couldn't upgrade because of the current shortage. My pc build is:
CPU Ryzen 5 3600 3rd gen
GPU Sapphire Radeon R9 280X VAPOR-X
Motherboard Gigabyte X570 Aorus Elite
RAM Vengeance Pro 2X8GB DDR4
PSU Cooler Master G750M 750w

Appreciate the advise/input. Hoping for not much bad news. How bad would gaming on this be and would the GPU be strained running it and be liable to breaking down? If it's not bad (for like CSGO gaming), would it be worst (FPS wise etc) than me using my current monitor - an old 1080p TV with 60hz. Thanks!

Well, you can always run it lower resolutions to keep your FPS. You could try 2560x1080 for example.

Not 100% sure you can get 3440x1440 at 165hz out of the GPU. Display port 1.2 should hit about 17.28 Gbps, and 3440x1440 at 120hz is 17.83 Gbps. HDMI 1.4 is less than half that, so 60hz is probably it.

Not a big deal, you just have to try and find a new GPU at some point. It should let you see things at least for the time being.

Thanks for the input Eximo. Appreciate it. Would you say moving from a 60hz HD TV to this monitor is slightly better or I'm actually bottlenecking performances now using a much more demanding monitor against my old gpu? Agreed I definitely will be upgrading the gpu eventually just not for the foreseeable future because prices and supply are just ridiculous now. Thanks!

The performance to resolution is almost a 1-1 ratio. If you get 100fps at 1080, at double the resolution you would get 50fps. This is not exact but close enough to estimate.

You can also test with your existing setup by using in-game resolution scaling by rendering it at a higher resolution then sampling it down to the monitor resolution.

You can run the monitor at 1920x1080 if you want, not going to hurt anything. And you would then be able to get at least 144hz out of it. Just that the GPU wasn't built with high refresh high resolution rates in mind.

Hey there. Thanks for the input. Would you mind explaining on the rendering then sampling down part? Don't really understand. As in where would the menus to do these two be? I should be able to pick it up from there. Much appreciated!
