I've had this Radeon HD 7850 1GB for a while now, and it's updated to its latest driver, which is the one before the Crimson Updates, I tried installing the new Crimson drivers but apparently AMD decided to stop supporting Windows 8 and decided to move it up to 8.1, and my Window won't let me upgrade to 8.1 for whatever reason. Needless to say the new R9 290 Card comes with a CD to install drivers for it, but I don't have a working CD-ROM, so how do I go about this?

Do I just keep the same drivers I have now or what?

Any help is appreciated.

If you look you can download old driver versions of Catalyst control center for ATI based cards via the Ati downloads and support page.

Select all of the values manually.
There all there the old driver sets including the ones for windows 8 32bit and x64 version drivers.
Scroll down this page slightly once loaded.

Bit mode of driver required based on installed os.
Click on display results.

Scroll down select download.

Click on link to page for manual driver selection.

Nothing is ever hard if you look hard enough.

I'm confused, I did that and the latest driver available on the site for my OS and Card is literally older than what I have installed for Catalyst right now :S

Just showing you that if you need to revert to an older Driver version for compatibility, stability and to install for the version of windows you have but have no means of a DVD drive in your system.

It can be done. In most cases a new driver version is to patch a problem with some games or add support for other games that are more newer to work right with the cards video drivers from version no to no.

It was more of a point to say your not stuck trying to get a windows 8 certed driver if you could not obtain it from the driver cd or Dvd.
Ste.

In any case you could of just downloaded the latest Crimson driver right clicked on the install and ran it in compatibility mode for windows 8 via the pull down options of right clicking on the install exe once downloaded to your system Ste by selecting properties option, compatibility tab.
That would work.

I'm confused here, are you saying you got a new R9 290 because you couldn't get any new updated drivers for your HD 7850? If so, what was the problem with the old driver, did it stop working? You know you don't have to always have the latest divers for the card to work just fine.
As for the drivers for the 290, just download the latest from AMD's website, it's easy to do.

No, I'll walk through it more thoroughly.

So I have a really outdated GPU right now in my system (HD 7850 1GB) And bought an R9 290 4GB to upgrade.

I have Windows 8 not 8.1, and for whatever reason AMD decided to stop supporting Windows 8 to download their drivers and only support Windows 8.1+

My windows however, will not upgrade to 8.1, have no idea why and it isn't my main concern ATM.

I also have no CD-ROM so I can't plop the CD Driver that comes in the box.

So I'm wondering if I can get the latest drivers for the R9 pre AMD Crimson. Or if the drivers are even necessary.

I get you Ste,

What I was saying is just download the latest crimson driver off the ATI website.

And rather than left clicking on the Install file once save to your hard drive to run it.
Right click on the file and select the properties option.

You will see the compatibility tab in the new window.
If you click on it you can select run in compatibility mode for windows 8. ticking the box.
Click ok, or apply and then run the file with a left click on the setup and install icon for the new crimson driver.

That way if you choose you can install the latest crimson driver with, and onto your windows 8 OS.
If you don`t have access to the drivers on the DVD supplied with your R9 card due to a lack of having a DVD drive in your system.
and wish to try the new crimson driver software version.

Ste.

The latest crimson driver should install without any problems if you choose to give it a try.
All the best for the New year 2016.

Hope it helps.

Ok, that makes sense. Well yes you need to install drivers if you want any type of performance from your GPU. I would think that you can get a driver that will work on your computer by visiting http://support.amd.com/en-us/download and using the automatic detect and install.

There is no compatibility option for Windows 8, just goes down to Windows 7, have you done it this way?
