I currently have a corsair spec 01 case and yes i know it isnt great so that's why im planning to upgrade. I want to get a case which will cool my asus direct cu2 r9 290 better than my current case. In most games my card is getting to 88 degrees sometimes. Would the corsair air 540 actually make that much of a difference to the temperatures of gpu?

yes, there are tons of fan mounts and passive air path on that case. Since it has 2 sides (i'm sure you've done your research on it) it gets rid of all that clutter allowing optimal airflow for essential parts.

I've been considering acquiring one of these, but alas.. I am broke.

but seriously, these make great systems.
