R9 290 or GTX 780?

Solution

It might perform better in benchmarks, but the R9 290 is more practical and performs better in...

The two cards are almost equals in performance. You can't really go wrong either way. It's just your preference in brand and vendor. If you want a red and black schemed card asus's Direct CU II cards are usually in that color scheme as are MSI's gaming series cards.

The 780 because it has

  • Better passmark score 8,055 vs 6,398

Significantly more energy-efficient load power consumption250W vs 381W

Higher effective memory clock speed 6,008 MHz vs 5,000 MHz

Much quieter load noise level 48.1 dB vs 57.2 dB

Significantly more energy-efficient idle power consumption 62W vs 87W

Better 3DMark vantage graphics score 42,870 vs 38,650

    Slightly better 3DMark06 score 35,080 vs 32,300

Significantly higher memory clock speed 1,502 MHz vs 1,125 MHz

Quieter idle noise level 38 dB vs 39.5 dB

Better passmark direct compute score 4,042 vs 2,740

More texture mapping units 192 vs 160

    Lower TDP

if you are ona tight busdget, the r9 290 would be your choice, but if you have money to spare and want a better cooling and temps, then the 780 will be better, both have aftermarket manufacturers that offer a red/black colour scheme and both can run all games max on a 1080p monitor

Admirable
The Radeon will consume more power and will overclock less but has a slight performance edge out of the box.

The GTX 780 will run cooler and quieter and thus should overclock better but costs more money. Hope this helps!

It might perform better in benchmarks, but the R9 290 is more practical and performs better in real games. It's much cheaper, and it has 1 more GB of Vram. If you want to save electricity go with the GTX 780.
A more accurate comparison:

If you have a powercolor/sapphire card, it will solve all the heat problems of the 290

if you are going to record, nvidia has shadowplay which is MUCH better than fraps etc. too little games support physx, so it's almost unnecessary, it supports gsync but doesnt support mantle... i would choose whats cheaper

I never use GPUboss or any of those other sites because they're just the most superficial and generic scores and comparisons with no real true basis. They harvest info from a bunch of reviews on different sites and it gets jumbled up and messy. Plus there is obvious bias which is shown when they do not list things like compute comparisons for some GPUs versus others that are in the same price range but one is very superior over the other. SSDboss and CPUboss are both just completely synthetic. (PS filter times guise!!1!!!) It's a shame really.

Anandtech does testing on the same hardware. Definitely more reliable than GPUBOSS, SSDBOSS, etc
