Hello,

I bought a r9 290 royal ace to replace my 6950.
(PC config : seasonic x650 psu, giga z68x mb, 2 wd black, 1 ssd , 8gb kingmax)

Problem:
- artefacts at boot screen (it would show ripples instead of gigabyte logo)
- played gta 5 for ~30 everything smooth, no artefacts
-after that the screen went black , pc shutdown during unigine bench (5 min in)

->PC will not boot with the R9 290 (dead as a rock, nothing starts)
->PC works fine with old 6950

Did the gpu suffer damage because the psu was not enough ?
Going to rma it anyway , but if they give the same model back , I want to know if I need to change my psu.

Thanks!

Solution
That is a Club3D R9 290. They are a lower end brand for Radeon cards. If you want a R9 290 I would suggest a Sapphire or Asus over Club3D by far as both of the brands I mentioned have much better quality and reliability.

The PSU most likely did not kill the GPU and normally if your PSU was not able to provide enough power you would instead see random shut downs or performance loss before seeing artifacts. Artifacts are due to one of two things:

1. GPU is overheating
2. VRAM is bad

Most cases is bad VRAM, which is why sometimes games will run or might run for a short time until they try to access the bad VRAM. Because you are getting artifacting during POST I would say it is bad VRAM.

I suggest returning it and trying to get one of...
