I'm sure this question has been asked 1,000 times. But I was wondering which would be best? The only comparisons that I can find are some older videos with the 700 series when the R9 first came out.

Also, if it matters, I've got an FX-8350 Black Edition, just to check for bottlenecks and such. But I don't think it will be an issue.

Solution
they both perform similar, the 970 might perform better in one game while the 290x might perform better in another, but its always just a few FPS from each other, if you are on a budget of 300$ or less get the r9 290/x if not the gtx 970 is the better option due to nvidia updating their drivers often and the GPu requires less power and also outputs less heat, there are also other goodies like Physx which some games support, i myself have a r9 290 and the card is loud and always hovers around 80-85C while gaming.
The GTX 970 is better at 1920 x 1080 while the 290X catches up and is a bit better at higher resolutions.

That's complete crap. AMD GPUs do best with Intel CPUs and with Nvidia it doesn't make a measurable difference either way.

ive seen so many benchmarks and videos that AMD products work well together and intel and nvidia work better together either way the 290x is still a better option

The 970 works a little better than the 290x, because, first, is Nvidia, and all their technology like physx is a plus. It works with a lot less voltage, that`s true, and it won`t heat your room in winter likea the 290x. I have one and believe me, it goes above 60/70 degress.
I would tell you that, with an FX 8350, the AMD one is the best choise, since is exactly the same combo I actually have, and it has never fail me for anything, neither gaming or work.

i have a msi 970 i play titanfall cod 3 bf3/4 at around 50- 60 fps on a 3440x 1440p lg 34" monitor and it's a smooth as i could wish for awsome cards
go for the 970
ps mine is clocked to 1495mhz still cool n quite
