Hi guys!
I've been using the HIS R9 290X iPower IceQ X² Turbo 4GB for a while, been very happy with it. Recently I got my hands on a SAPPHIRE NITRO+ RX 480 OC 8GB and decided it would be nice to do some benchmarks of those two and I wanted to throw some numbers at you, because the results are rather surprising to me.
To start I'll just give a quick comparison of those two cards -
290x - core clock @1040MHz; memory clock @1350MHz 4GB/512bit bus
RX480 - core clock @1306MHz; memory clock@2000MHz 8GB/256 bus
and system specs:
i56600K @4,4GHz on Asus Z170-A
16GB RAM
all games installed on Adata Sata III SSDs running on Win10, most on ultra/very high settings and 1920x1200 resolution.
So this is what I got (format is [min, max, avg / min/max/avg] with first set of numbers referring to the 290x, second to the 480). Oh! and I used FRAPS or benchmarking tool if available.
Fallout 4: 41, 87, 62,9 / 36, 99, 64,6
Witcher 3: 45, 58, 51,8 / 47, 64, 55,5
Rise of the Tomb Raider (just avg here): 59,6 / 64,7 - fun fact, system uses 12,1GB of RAM while running this game
Arkham Knight: 82, 140, 104 / 83, 149, 107
Dragon Age: Inquisition (min, avg): 38,6, 52,6 / 35,8, 52
Titanfall 2: 91, 145, 127 / 76, 145, 123
Dishonored 2: 30, 80, 45 / 49, 107, 59
Crysis 3: 35, 74, 54,4 / 31, 67, 47,6
Metro LL: 10,3, 83,28 47,67 / 10,7, 95,5, 46
Vanishing of Ethan Carter: 42, 147, 90,9 / 53, 124, 80,4
Bioshock Infinite: 29, 158, 115,6 / 19, 152, 108,5
Heaven Benchmark: 27, 110, 61,6 (score 1551) / 25, 105, 56,3 (score 1418)
Tried to benchmark Doom also to get some Vulkan results, but I just couldn't get PresentMon to run - I must have messed sth up.
So there it is - it's a bit messy, so sorry for that, but I guess it's still readable and my main point here comes across well. And the point is an old 290x mostly outperforms a brand spankin' new RX 480 with double the RAM and higher clocks. I wasn't expecting this to be honest. I never thought the 480 would blow the 290x out of the park or something, but I did expect it would have a slight edge all around. Meanwhile it's more powerful only in a few newer games and by a margin so small it makes the card look silly.
What do you guys make of this? is the 480 such a weak card? is there a design flaw somwhere or was that on purpose?
And before you ask - yes, I uninstalled all the drivers and did fresh install.

Well yeah, I get that, but still - this a is brand new card, new architecture, faster clocks, more RAM... plus reading benchmarks on the web you get a picture of the 480 performing better than the 290x - that's why it's so weird to me.

so by your logic, a brand new card, a gtx 1050 should be better then a titan?

I have a Sapphire R9 290X Tri-X OC and I highly appreciate this comparison. I knew the 480 was not the top of the line, and I can't wait to see the R9 490 paired with a Zen enthusiast cpu!

no, that's not what I meant and I don't think that's a good example you made there. What I meant was, on paper those two cards look very similar in many aspects, so since the 480 is a new archtecture I'd expect it to be at least a tad more powerful than the 290x. And granted I didn't read the 480 review here on TH (dunno why), but those benchmarks all around the web really indicate that the 480 performs better.

I see what your saying man ... and I think your right. By the specs the rx 480 should spank this card by a small margin
in every game. I totally disagree with the notion that the cards segment should matter here. That said , I give the rx 480
the benefit of the doubt solely because the drivers/optimization are not as mature.
