Hi all,

I'm currently running an R9 390 on a 1000W PSU, and obviously that's fine.

My brother has a gtx 760 and wants to get a 390, but he only has a 600W PSU, the EVGA 600B. It has 49 amps on the 12V, and I've heard the 390 uses 50 amps, but I'm not sure.

Will it run on that PSU? Does it matter if the amps are 1 off what it says it needs? I don't know a whole lot about power supplies.

Thanks!

It could, but it would be advisable to run the system on stock settings. With the 4690k he could probably OC a little without too much concern, since the 4690k doesn't consume much power at stock settings.

4690k wattage use at idle/loaded.

GTA V can push to near 4gb. Rainbow six siege easily pushes beyond 4 gb with the HD texture pack. Havent checked fallout but Ive heard the same about it.

I would aim for a 650 gold or 750 bronze at the least. I have mine on a 650 gold and theres not a ton of overhead left over.

Well, just to let my 2 cents here, I´ve been using my R9 390 overclocked with my 4670k Also overcloked with a 600W OCZ PSU (also a Corsair Hydro H80i) with no problems at all.

I´ve ran torture tests like Prime95 at the same time as Furmark and the system never gave out.

Also never had a problem with games or rendering softwares.

But, that´s just me.

Try Playing the "middle earth shadow of mordor" with the 4K texture pack in a 4K monitor. when it's maxed settings my r9 390 was using 6GB of VRAM and my brother's GTX970 couldn't maxed it without SLI. ps. the texture pack does nothing if you don't have a 4K monitor. and if you're a 1080p gamer both VGAs will have their ups and downs in games with only a max 10 fps difference.

Im looking into getting one of these and Im running this one. it's rated at 54a on the 12V rail, Im running an older Intel I5 not over clocked or anything. Think that will run it fine or should I step down to a 290. Im currently using a 6970 so either would be a pretty big upgrade at this point.

LOL, a guy comes and comments on a thread saying "did you miss something" when in fact that post was made over a year ago. No Sir but you DEFINITELY missed something.

FYI the 390 isn't superior. It has more RAM but a slower memory bus. In the end it only winds up trading blows with the R9 290x. Let's not forget, this post is over a year old. At the time of posting the 290x was cheaper.

Depends on the game. Skyrim will use everything you throw at it, at least if you run it on Windows 7 :) Though to answer OP, I have an overclocked 390 and an 850W PSU, works fine.

Which is still more speculative than his first-hand account.

Not really, there are different answers across the board - all boards - and it is still uncertain. So you can play it with a 650W PSU but you have to get a "good" one. What does that mean? People think BeQuiet are "good", and yet their affordable series are breaking down everywhere (in Amazon reviews). So there is very little specific information to rely on - all that is clear is that one would be taking chances going below 750W and even there.

This question has been answered, what is uncertain to you?
1. If you are that guy who looks at brand names, instead of models for judging the reliability/performance of parts (not just PSU), you're in for a lot of headaches. You can't just say "Hey, this brand's $200 PSU is good, so their $20 budget model should be good as well".

2. I base my answers and recommendations according to completed builds, reviews, and even tier lists. You can't get any more objective than that; how is that speculative? how is that information "little"?

3. Even if you get a 750W PSU, if its a cheap Chinese knockoff bought for $10, you'd likely still kill your PC. That meaning, you'd be taking chances every time you don't make an informed decision.

Really dude? This was almost a year ago lol

So originally I had an 850 psu with this and it was fine until it died and I replaced it with 650 one. Now as soon as I play a game that really loads the gpu instant crash. I thought my card was knackered but I think that it's the psu not having the required wattage bear in
Mind I have a dreaded 8350 and the lights dim when the PC comes on ;-)

Well a crappy or weak 650w PSU could give you issues. If it a quality PSU or close to one, 650w should be fine for any single GPU based computer these days. Hell even a 450-500w quality PSU could handle a decent system.

What are all of your parts in the system?
Are you OC'ing anything? if so, try putting the settings back to stock and see if you can game without the OC.
What PSU do you have now (make and model)?
