I am curious to which one is better for gaming? I am buying all my parts for my new build but now with the 390x coming out should I go with that or stick with the 980 GTX?
For the sake of simplicity, the 390x is still a 290x.
The 980 is still a better card. The only time this may change is with the release of the fury cards.
The 980 is still 10% faster at 4k over the 290x, and that is with stock clocks.
The 390x may be slightly faster than the 290x, however it has very little OC headroom, and the 980 OCs well thanks to maxwells efficiency.
Rebageling cards without a substantial architecture change isnt going to change much.
For me living in the UK I'll factor in the running cost too, and these 380X cards seem to cost at least 1.5X as much to run than the 980's . As for future proofing we have yet to see and DX12 benchmarks, that's more about future proofing than the memory would be. How each company has understood the new DX12 will be interesting. It could show a whole new picture.
I guess it depends on resolution
At 4k the 390x beats the gtx 980 in all but 2 games tested (battlefield 4 and tomb raider) At 4k it appears that the 390x owns the gtx 980 which I am very surprised seeing how old the architecture is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gfK0Yr1xTFo

don't listen to the nvidiots or the amd fan boys do your research and use the bang for you buck factor not to mention compatibility it al depends on your gaming and in the end it all comes down to the speed of the hardware physically the flops and the bitrates not the 3d benchmarks if your actually knowing what you are talking about you would know that scripters are bought out to write performance for a specific a company nvidia they aren't in a battle of amd vs Nidia they all actually share funds and work together to share the market so make your own choice by research
if you look at tests: you will see that in some games the 980 wins. In some games the 390x does. I noticed that the 980 seemed to perform well in older games and more modern ones the 390x did. Perhaps the 390x is not optimised for them or whatever.
if you look at the hardware: the 390x has many advantages over the 980 but there are a few areas where the 980 is stronger like clock speed. I remember thinking the 390x seems to have the most advantages. It is cheaper as well in the UK.
Hello Please read this very carefully.
First in terms of performance in HD, Full HD and 2k the Nvidia GTX 980 is 4% more better but in 4k the AMD Radeon R9 390X is 2% more better. In latest games we saw that 390x is a bit better but 980 is having a good difference in some old titles. Performance wise both are just the same but still 980 has a little edge. The other thing is overclocking. The Nvidia Gtx 980 is very good at overclocking and 390X is giving you a very small room. The temperatures and power consuption is lower. The conclusion is that Nvidia GTX 980 worths the extra money.
I agree with much of what Het Ashar has said. I would say that they are very close and it is difficult to say with certainty which is better because the difference is so small, changes in the analysis can affect the conclusion. The 390x probably has the highest odds of being a better card in future titles due to directx12 but this is speculative.
The only reason the 980 is worth the extra money is if you are to overclock it. When both cards are overclocked, the 980 is significantly better. If you are to crossfire in the future, 2 390x cards would produce too much noise for me (I own a 390x). Some people may also not be able to power two cards in this set up. I am not sure about two 980s in SLI. I assume they produce much less noise and consume less power.
I had a dream last night that I had replaced my 390x with a 980. Must have been this thread. I don't think you can just say something is better. It all depends on your tastes. I am not bothered by the noise of one 390x with the headphones in. Power draw is negligible in terms of cost for me. I wanted to game at QuadHD and the 390x was perfect. I would prefer a 980 because I would overclock it and it would have superior performance to the 390x in that scenario. But it is too much extra money. In my opinion., the 970 is an inferior product to the 390x, especially at quad HD. I was able to get it for cheaper than normal, so I was happy with the 390x. GOing forward the 390 and 290 series may prove to be a good investment with newer games, mantle and directx 12.
For the sake of simplicity, the 390x is still a 290x.

I don't quite agree. The 980 is equivalent to the 390x until both are overclocked. This is a valid point because I am not sure what percentage will overclock and certaintly I don't want to overclock in the first few months of a card in case I invalidate warranty.
Saying that for the sake of simplicity the 390x is still a 290x is technically accurate. But when people read it, it can give the wrong impression. It gives the impression that the 390x and 290x have equal performance. I have no idea if the 8GB impacts performance or will ever impact performance. But the improved design allows for higher core and memory clocks which makes is a better card with higher overclock potential as well. The 290x design is not capable of the same performance as the 390x design.

Ok so I am all AMD here with my system but I would have to say to go with the 980 as more games are going to run better with Nvidia than with AMD cards.
Arkham knight uses over 4Gb of VRAM. Not sure how this affects the performance but the 980 seems to outperform the 390x on that one. Just saying in case you are wondering about VRAM. A lot of people reporting stuttering on that game. Might have something to do with VRAM. I don't have stuttering. I am a 390x (8Gb).

not necessarily anymore ever since AMD just launched GPUOpen. Now only games exclusive to Nvidia Gameworks will most likely not be as optimized as most other games
Bottom line is you cant compare between apples and oranges...
forget about fruit; let's talk cars. The BMW M3 (GTX980) Vs the Ford Mustang GT (R9 390X)
The M3 has a smaller engine as well as higher price tag... but it is more fuel efficient and is actually the better car.
The Mustang even with the 6.2 ltr V8 engine and being a gas guzzler cant go toe to toe with the M3 (except maybe in a drag race = read = 4K resolutions).
Exactly thus,
The R9 390X is cheaper than the GTX980. But you will need to buy a good 750Watt psu for it anyways which pushes up the total price to as much as or slightly
more than the GTX980's price tag which can easily run on a 600Watt psu.
