I am curious to which one is better for gaming? I am buying all my parts for my new build but now with the 390x coming out should I go with that or stick with the 980 GTX?

@Tom GR - Ok but vram can occasionally be an issue at 4GB but it's not too much d a problem. I would be concerned with SLI 980s at 4k though going forward.

@titanpilot - 390x is a great card for sure. But if I could be willing to stump up the extra cash, I would definitely go for a 980 as its a better card by way more than 4% when overclocked. If you don't overclock it, the 390x is on a par "trades blows", it really comes down to which games you play when making a selection. I don't think you can say 4% as that is just a statistic from one sample of games. A different sample will show different results, some which will favour the 390x as the margin is so small. I'm backing the 390x to possibly be the better card at stock speed going forward (directx 12)

yeah, I agree the 980 is better, but it aint worth me upgrading to a 980 from my 390x, I have had no problems with it, I ant an NVidia or AMD fanboy

What resolution will the OP be gaming at? If 1080p I wouldn't bother with either and get a GTX 970. The 980 is £150 more than the GTX 970 with minimal performance improvements relative to price.

In a year you can tag on another GTX 970 for much cheaper if you want to play some 4k games. The GTX 980 just doesn't represent great value whereas the GTX 970 is one of the best value cards out there.

So between the GTX 980 and R9 390X, I'd go for the AMD as it's £80 cheaper with comparable if not better performance in some areas.
At 1080p, go for the GTX 970, it will max out most games at that resolution. Make sure your motherboard supports SLI and tag another one on there in a year or so if you want 1440p or some 4k gaming, at which point they'll be much cheaper anyway.
