R9 Fury X running slow?

i did some benchmarks today I'm seeing something strange. for some reason this Fury X is slower than my EVGA GTX 980 FTW. for example, i ran Unigine Valley bench at 1440p/DX11/Ultra/8x AA on both cards. the GTX 980 scored 1880 points but the Fury X scored 1490. The bench also looked very choppy. when the GTX 980 runs it, it looks extremely smooth. I tried reinstalling the driver. same thing happens in other games. I spent the last hour googling for "slow Fury X" cards and came up with nothing. I know with nVidia, the nvidia experience software messes with the card's performance. is there something like that with new AMD drivers? the last AMD(s) i owned for longer than a week were a pair of HD 7970. so that was a while ago

I did a driver sweep of old drivers and installed newest AMD driver (15.7).

Specs:
5930K @ 5.1 GHz
Samsung 850 Pro 512GB SSD
Asus 99 Deluxe
4x4GB GeIL Super Luce 3400MHz, 15-15-15-36 1.5V
EVGA 1000 W Platinum PSU

This is a secondary gaming machine I just finished building. At first I got a used EVGA GTX 980 FTW on ebay for $385. it worked great and I liked it. But today while shopping at Micro Center I saw a demo unit Gigabyte R9 Fury X being sold for $560. They said it was never powered on but was sitting on display under some glass. needless to say i jumped on it immediately. came home, plugged it in. and the above was the result.

PS: The pump on this thing is LOOOOUUUUUUUUUDDDDD!!! Coil whine is pretty bad too. I know these are known issues with the Fury X but just thought I should point out that my card does have these issues too.

but the card is very pretty http://s22.postimg.org/u71h5pzjj/IMG_2146.jpg

It's expected that the GTX 980 will do better on some tasks. Especially if you have overclocked the GTX 980.

uninstalled AMD's "gaming evolved" app that's bundled with the driver. that seems to have helped. getting 2070 points in unigine valley. the problem however is that the video still looks choppy at times while running the benchmark. the GTX 980 does not have this problem. it's as smooth as butter.
