err... it seems like you had your mind set before you posted this thread, because I don't think anyone here advocated for the single titan x. If you're gonna go with a single card you should probably get the single 980ti... titan is not a good price/performance ratio. But either way it is definitely a more powerful card, and if that's what you truely want go for it
Fortunately, it's your decision, but you don't strike me as someone who's willing to compromise. The FuryX's (all $610+ on Newegg) would be a compromise in terms of VRAM, driver support, and overclocking abilities versus custom GTX 980 Ti's. They are cheaper though, as they should be, given their level of performance and limitations.

Have you considered that Pascal is due out in a few months?

crossfire has better scaling atm, furyx crossfire pretty much matches up, beats 980ti sli in some games, loses in others,
but the custom 980ti's you are talking about all run for $700+, you're talking about a lot more money, seahawk goes for $750, lightning for more. If you're going to make comparisons you should really be talking about the baseline 980ti models, ie MSI basic, evga basic. These "custom models" you refer to will cost OP at LEAST $150 more combined than basic r9 fury x models. The sapphire radeon fury x is currently running for $610 on newegg, and that model is liquid cooled.

Plus, on top of all of that, it's good to support the underdog in the battle for graphics supremacy, as AMD is kind of banking on support due to their lack of new CPU's in the recent years. This isn't to say that they are making worse cards, infact their most recent line up of r9 cards are quite fantastic.

And i'm not an AMD fanboy, i currently run a gtx 970 in my system

the new top end i guess under the $2000, but can't be sure, they talk about double the perf on the green side, and double the perf/w on the red side, nothing can be said about the new generation, all marketing talk and assumpions

all fury x's are liquid cooled, the same cooler

Thank you for your answers guys this helped me a little. Based off of the benchmarks i saw and problems of stuttering freezing and issues that AMD has with both its fans, hardware and software provided for the r9 fury x i decided to not go with their crossfire build and pick the nvidia titan x hybrid factory superclocked x1 with 48 gb of ram. I feel that 1 single strong GPU will be a better winner for me here simply because it will allow me to play every single game in fairly good quality not just.. the ones that support crossfire. Plus.. once the Nvidia Pascal series is out that will feature a second generation of HBM i will be able to sell my titan x hybrid and add maybe some more cash $ to buy the pascal. Thanks for the help folks.
