Hello

One of the nurses at my dialysis center just gave me her older computer after the hard drive died--I have a new HD to put into it. It's a Gateway with a 1.2 GHz Athlon in it. The video is integrated into the motherboard, but it does have an 4X AGP slot.

I'm thinking about putting a video card in it. I don't play a lot of games (mostly Diablo 2, Combat Flight Simulator...) and also work with graphics some (Paint Shop Pro).

www.allstarshop.com has several brands of cards based on the Radeon 7000 going for $35-$50. Do you think this older system is strong enough to handle this card?

Thanks for your help.

1.2GHz Athlon isn't too old, I can play Need For Speed Underground with my Duron 1GHz with a GF2MX

I would recommend by sth like Radeon9000/9200SE, as they are more powerful than Radeon7000 and should be able to be purchased at very low prices.

but hey, if you can just spend a little more, then dun get any SE graphic cards, get a real 9000/9200

Oh my, do not buy a R7000. Slow card doesn't support Hardware T&L.

Anyway, the R8500LE (R9100) is faster than the R9200, and it is cheaper too. I just received this one yesterday for $34 shipped. It was $35 for the past week after I ordered, and It's now up to $46, but check back and see if it goes back down. Sweet card for $35, and I doubt that a faster card is available for under $50 unless you go refurb or used.

Actually you got it backwards. The 7000 is NOT enough CARD for the MACHINE!

The 7000 is a cut-down version of the original Radeon DDR. The optimum processor for the Radeon DDR would be a PIII or Athlon 1000, anything more and the card's a bottleneck, anything less and the CPU's a bottleneck.

So the Radeon DDR would be a good choice, they overclocked that a little to get the Radeon 7500, and chopped it roughly in half to get the Radeon VE and 7000.

So here's the cards I'd recommend:
Radeon 7500 (or Radeon DDR if it's much cheaper).
GeForce4 MX440

If you can find them cheap, consider these better cards:
Radeon 8500, 8500LE (slower version of the 8500), 9100 (renamed 8500)
Radeon 9000 (very slow version of 8500, still enough for you)
GeForce 3 (any version)
GeForce 4 Ti 4200.

Better still would be a GeForce 4 Ti4200 or Radeon 9500/9600. Ti4200 performs better, 9500/9600 offers newer features.

Yup, wish I ordered more before the increase. They limited it to one per order, but you could just place multiple orders. Stupid on there part as it was free shipping. New 8500le for $35 ain't bad at all.
