My new ATI Radeon 9700 PRO will not work at 8x AGP. Everytime I run 3DMark2001SE, the system will freeze about 5-6 minutes through the benchmark everytime. I backed the AGP speed down to 4x and the problem goes away.

Any suggestions as to how I can get my card running at 8x AGP.... I know the performance I am losing isnt huge but approximately how much of a difference is there between 8x and 4x AGP using this card?

My system:
Intel P4 2.4GHz 800MHz FSB Hyperthreading
ASUS P4P800 Motherboard (BIOS revision 1008)
ATI Radeon 9700 PRO
2x256 Samsung PC3200 Dual Channel DDR
Western Digital 40GB 7200RPM Harddrive
Samsung DVD Drive
Samsung CDRW/CDR Drive
Enermax 400Watt PSU

Have you tried flashing mobo your bios? Newest drivers? Dx9.0a? There is a newer version of 3d mark 2001se that enables testing of agp 8x, have you using it? Does it freezes only in 3dmark or in every 3d game?

I wouldn't worry about it too much, the performance difference is negligible and you certainly wouldn't notice it while playing. Less than 5% for sure.

------------------
Radeon 9500 w/256 bit memory bus @ 367/310
AMD AthlonXP 2000+
3dMark03: 3439

Flashed both. Catalyst 3.6 drivers. DX 9.0a. I havent used the new version of 3dmark2001se but that shouldnt matter because the problem occurs in every 3d game as well.

Do you have fast writes enabled? That's another source of potential conflict, and it seems to produce neglible differences on benchmarking (absolutely no diff in my case). I've benchmarked my 9500 Pro at both 4X and 8X on an Asus A7V8X, and have not found a significant difference (i.e. less than 1%), so it shouldn't matter for you anyway.

Where does good judgement come from? Experience. Where does experience come from? Bad judgement.
