Radeon can't run the Texture test of 3Dmark 2000?!

I just checked 3d mark 2000 and it won't run the 16,32 and 64mb texture tests. It used to run then perfectly with the following scores:
16MB 113.2
32MB 56.6
64MB 24.9
Now I can only run the 8MB and the 16MB (barely with a 1.2 score).
After I changed from Windows98 to 2nd edition everything is a mess. Could this be a faulty Radeon Card? Mobo? CPU? Since it is having problems accesing texture memory I am now thinking that it might be my Radeon? As a whole I lost 400 3Dmark 2001 points after my OS change and that is killing me! Please help me to identify the problem so I can get a new card if its defective.
Regards

The ATI drivers has a built in memory test, you should test the memory of your card. If it shows up with errors ATI will replace the card. The last guy took like 1 week for ATI to replace the card when his card showed memory errors. A very rare problem but it happens. Go to device manager:
1. Display Adapter
2. Radeon DDR
3. Right click and select properties, you should be able to find the memory test. This is for Win9x systems. W2K doesn't have this test available in the drivers.

Still the chances are that there is a configuration problem with you system or card.

Download PowerStrip3.0
<A HREF="http://www.entechtaiwan.com/ps.htm" target="_new">http://www.entechtaiwan.com/ps.htm</A>

1. Install
2. On taskbar click on PS3 icon to open menu
3. <b>Options...</b>
4. <b>Adapter Information...</b>
5. Cut and paste all of the <b>Diagnostic report</b> here. Note to the right of the <b>Diagnostic report</b> scroll bar is three buttons, the top button copies the report to the clipboard so that you can paste here.

This shows virtually everything I need to know in order to help you.

Now what is your benchmark for 3dMark2001?

Do you have the update V1.1 for 3dMark2000? You might want to try redownloading benchmark and reinstalling to see if that makes a difference.

Another check for you to do, please run:

In the <b>Start</b> menu in the <b>Run</b> command:
Type in <b>DXdiag</b> to start up Directx Diagnostics
Go to the display tab and run the two test in that section (<b>Test DirectDraw, Test Direct3d</b>) and let us know what you get.
<i>Note:
DirectDrawAcceleraton should be Enabled (button should say Disable)
Direct3DAcceleration should be Enabled (button should say Disable)

In memory adresses:
Fast back-to-back accepted is checked
PCI 66MHZ capable is checked

I ran the test at DXDIAG and got an error in the las Direct Draw test:

Direct Draw test result: Failure at step 7 (User verification of full screen bouncing): HRESULT = 0x00000000(unknonw error)

When the full screen bouncing square test starts all I see is a small flash of the black screen and the white square but quickly comes back to the desktop.
Could this be my problem cause that test ran perfectly before?
My score for 3dmark2001 is now 800 pts but it used to be 1200 before the move from W98 to 2nd edition. I have to download 3Dmark 2000 again and will tell you later my results.

Looks like either a driver misconfiguration or a DirectX misconfiguration. I recommend you uninstall the Radeon drivers, use Rage3d.com to find out how to remove everybit of the ATI drivers and then reinstall. If you still have the problem then a complete reinstall of Windows as in format of your partition, hopefully you have two partitions.

Also if you had a previous card prior to the Radeon the drivers can interfere with the Radeon Drivers. The Voodoo card drivers seems to be the worst case. Even if you updated windows that won't remove the old drivers. A format and complete install is the only way unless you know where all your previous video card files are at plus all the registry items.

What is the speed of your cpu?
Did you have a previous card on your system? What was it?

I had a TNT (Velocity 4400) but as I said before when I first installed my Radeon I ran all the benchmarks with no problem so I guess that the old card drivers can't be bothering now. I am going to reinstall direct x and the radeon drivers to see if that solves the problem if not then I should install windows again right?
I have a PII 350MHZ (which is running at 361MHZ because my bus is running at 103 for some unknown reason since I never did anything to overclock it).

1. Did reinstalling the drivers and Directx helped?

2. Have you tried different versions of the Radeon drivers?

You indicated that you do not have bus mastering enabled on your motherboard which means the Radeon is waiting for every other card in your system. MEANS SLOW MO. You definitely have a configuration problem with you setup.

3. What is your AGP system configuration in PS3 whiched I asked for before? it should say the following:

-Hardware enabled should be checked
-software enabled should be checked

1200 is terrible for a Radeon in 3dMark2001 so your 360mhz cpu is not helping matters plus I think your setup is not right. I do need some answers to my questions for me to suggest things to you.

If you still have your TNT drivers in the Registry and system folders this can also be the cause, do this:

In the <b>Start menu</b> start <b>Search</b> for Files and Folders, type in <b>NV*</b>. All items that come up in the search delete. This will get rid of all Nvidia files and folders. If you cannot delete one of the files means one of the files is in use which also means maybe the cause of the problem.

You also indicated when you upgraded to WinSe is when you saw this problem. Actually you had a problem previous to this because 1200 is a very poor score for a Radeon. Obviously the problem got worst. Let me know what you find.

4. Please list all of what you have in your system as in:
-sound card and what slot
-ethernet adapters and what slot
-any other pci card and ISA cards if any in what slot
-amount of memory you have

5. Please do the following check:
- In the [Run} command type in <b>msinfo</b> (<i>if that doesn't work type in <b>msinfo32</b></i>),
- Expand <b>Hardware Resources</b>,
- Click on <b>Conflicts/sharing</b> and paste the results here please,

Shaolin hopefully we can get some kind of idea what is going on. Please answer my 6 questions or results. It would be good to have a general idea what is not right before formatting and redoing Windows. Maybe you will be able to correct it without reinstalling everything. I do need the additional information to be able to help you better, hopefully.

Once you tell me what you have etc. Then hopefully it will lead to a positive result. Hopefully you have some patience left because I know how frustrating devices can be or computers in general.

Here are the answers:
1) Now I do see the bouncing square in the direct draw test but the benchmarks still has the same problem. On thing I discovered in 3Dmarks2000 is that I get the same score for single texturing and multitexturing only 65.4! Meanwhile in 3dmark2001 I have good fill rate scores (300pts. single, 800pts. multitexture).
Also let me describe the way game 1 (Helicopter scene) in 3DM2000 runs. When the scene starts is just frozen then a little movement (a frame?) and then it runs smoothly at around 50fps. then when the helicopter shoots a missile as soon as the missile hits the enemy fighter it gets real choppy again almost frozen.
2) Yes but no difference whatsover.
quote"You indicated that you do not have bus mastering enabled"
What do you mean by that and where to enable it?
3) Yes it has both enabled (hard and software).
Actually based on other scores and in my extra slow CPU I think 1200 wasn't that bad but 800 is!
I erased two nv files that were there just now. Thanks for the tip.
4) sound card-Monster Sound mx300 (vortex2)
no ethernet
Isa hardware modem
Don't know how to get the slot information.
I have 128MB of Ram.
5)
IRQ 5 Intel 82371AB/EB PCI to USB Universal Host Controller
IRQ 5 IRQ Holder for PCI Steering
IRQ 10 RADEON
IRQ 10 IRQ Holder for PCI Steering
IRQ 10 IRQ Holder for PCI Steering
IRQ 11 Vortex AU8830 PCI Audio
IRQ 11 Vortex AU8830 Multifunction PCI Platform
IRQ 11 IRQ Holder for PCI Steering
IRQ 14 Primary IDE controller (dual fifo)
IRQ 14 Intel 82371AB/EB PCI Bus Master IDE Controller
IRQ 15 Secondary IDE controller (dual fifo)
IRQ 15 Intel 82371AB/EB PCI Bus Master IDE Controller

One last thing. When I checked my 3DM2001 results it indicated the following:
total local video memory 64MB
total local texture memory 64MB
total AGP memory 24MB
is this ok?
Regards and thanks again :)

I'd like to bring up one point. You said that your bus is running at 103Mhz for some unknown reason.
Do you remember if it's alway run at that speed (as in before you started having problems)?

To tell you the truth I am not sure if it was running at 100MHZ when I didn't have the problem. At first I belived that a defective mobo was my problem and still think it is but I kind of remember the CPU registering 360MHZ (bus at 103MHZ) before the change....honestly I don't recall what could be the most important factor. I am thinking that it may be that by running the CPU at 361MHZ it may not be working properly.

One thing I would like to understand is what is the difference between the 3DMark2000 Fill rate text and the one in 3DMark2001? Why I still get my regular score with 3Dmark2001 but now get only 65.1fps for both multi and single in 3Dmark2000 where I usually got around 260. single and 600 multi?

I rcommend you try reformatting and reinstalling Win98/se. I don't know much else to do. Your cpu is very limiting especially if it is a Celeron. Also if you don't want to reformat you can just delete the Windows directory which contains all the Windows configuration files and infomation. Still none of you your program configuration files will be saved.

If you move your current Windows directory to another Partition will give you the ability to revert back to what you had. I do recommend you house clean and just reformat and reinstall. If you have two partitions (I don't know why anybody wouldn't) you can make a directory on the non boot partition for all your current drivers, DX8, Radeon Drivers, Sound drivers so during installation it will be real easy to configure the hard without having to have to look for a disk, download etc. I can reformat and recover my structure of all my programs in less then 2 hours myself. I do have a few other tricks. Let me know what you think.

I advice to format. With my old system, I had an ATI which I upgraded to a TnT. I had big problem with old ATI drivers and only formating arranged the problem. I know you have done the reverse (nvidia to ATI) but that could be a piece of the puzzle.
