[citation][nom]Honis[/nom]I think I'll hold out on this generation for now. The performance increase isn't quiet what I expected. Good article. Thanks for helping make a decision. For reference, I'm running a 4780 1 gig and the most "advanced" game I play is Fallout 3.[/citation]

Well put. All the hype for a next gen card that out performs a last gen card...whatever

Something is wrong with this benchmark… In Resident Evil 5 with High Quality Settings, 8x AA, 1920x1200, DirectX 10, Fixed Benchmark the GTX295 get 89fps but my GTX295 get 110fps in same the Benchmark and with the same setting!!!

or we say look at this table.http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/ATI/Radeon_HD_5870/10.html
+ I own gtx260 and i noticed that there is a little difference in performnce drop between 1024x768 or 1680x1050. so GTX295 FTW from Evga Is best option.

Great article! I was very excited to read this one, however I have one superficial complaint. These are terribly organized charts IMO. Can we organize them in some fashion other than by random card selections? Otherwise, keep up the good work.

i am a little lost looking over the (Radeon HD 5770 And 5750 Review: Gentlemen, Start Your HTPCs) tests on this one show the single ATI 5850 for crysis at 1680x1050 it scored at 57.8fps but in (Radeon HD 5850: Knocking Down GTX 295 In CrossFire) in Crysis at 1680x1080 the 5850 scored 35.4fps was a different computer set up used or something to me that is a big change for the same card thought i would ask

I tend to notice a trend on the test results. You use different equipment instead of the same to make sure you're only comparing the particular item. And you're comparing ATI top of the line 5870x2 crossfire to the GTX285x2 SLI instead of GTX295x2 SLI. Why wouldnt it occur to use the fastest Geforce card to see how much better ATI 5870x2 really is over the GTX295x2. It almost seems as if you meant to be biased?

Umm, 2 HD5850s are more than a single GTX295 where i come.. Altho the DX11 is a plus, just like DX10, we wont be seeing any DX11 only titles. From my understanding DirectCompute is just Microsofts version of PhysX. The only thing I know for fact my GTX260 SLI rig wont do is tessellation and SM5.0. For the price point here in Canada, the gains dont justify the cost.

[citation][nom]amdfangirl[/nom]Hey I'm a bit blind.I wish Tom's would revert to the old system of placing things in order of performance. From the worst at the bottom of the chart to the best at the top.[/citation]
I am comparing the same card i have both only show 1 ati 5850 the (Radeon HD 5770 And 5750 Review: Gentlemen, Start Your HTPCs) this one show the single ATI 5850 for crysis at 1680x1050 it scored at 57.8fps and then (Radeon HD 5850: Knocking Down GTX 295 In CrossFire) in Crysis at 1680x1080 the 5850 scored 35.4fps Both only show 1 card in the test set ups and no x2 for crossfire only thing i see different from the 2 test set ups is one is running core i5 750 scored higher then the i7 975 and the (Radeon HD 5850: Knocking Down GTX 295 In CrossFire)article Event hhe 5850 in crossfire tested lower at 51.3fps lower then the single 5850 in (Radeon HD 5770 And 5750 Review: Gentlemen, Start Your HTPCs)article

Hey jerm, in this article they tested Crysis on Very High Details. In the 57xx article it was tested at High details. Which means that Crysis is playable at 1680x1050 with the 5850.

depends on the motherboard how far the pci express slots are how well each card can be cooled. case setup also matters alot and varies a ton.

waiting for a high overclocked model or revision is fine but the features are here, im sure watercooling two separatly will yeild nice overclocks, i would do that and im sure you could see 1ghz on each the 5850 and 5870's and i would be happy with that for a long time.

One thing i noticed. The GTX285 competes with the 4890 in single and sometimes is lower. So why are you comparing the GTX285 SLI to the HD5850/HD5870 crossfire? Shouldn't you be comparing the GTX295 SLI to the HD5850/HD5870 crossfire since the GTX295 single out does the 5870? The title is misleading saying it knocks down the GTX295 in crossfire when its 2 cards against 1. Their single card is still a weaker card. SO therefor 2 GTX295 SLI trumps HD5870 crossfire.

I think ill splash out on a 5850, im currently using an 8800GT 512mb which ive had for some time now, and it's served me well.
But with some of the later games thats come out its starting to show its age, Aion for example becomes stuttery at max settings at 1680x1050 (my screens max res) without even having much AF and no AA switched on.

As far as I can see from benchmarks the 5850 give just over double the FPS at the same res with AF and AA turned on, and for around the same price I paid for the 8800 (around the £200 mark).

Hopefully it will serve me as well as my trusty (rusty?) old 8800 😀

I have to wonder if the gtx285 is pumping out less frames because it is busy with Physx?

OK, I am going to switch after 3years from 8800GTX to Ati 5850. Just bought today. It is 1st time EVER I bought ATI and not NVIDIA. Nice to see, I paid less for 5850 as for 8800GTX ... If my old 8800gtx would not crash yesterday, I will keep that model for another 1 year. Now it looks like best choice price/power consumtion/noise/graphics power nr1 is 5850. I am also happy, that I will spend much more monay for energy every month, as 8800GTX was energy big hungry every month :) .. keep up cost of energy from 15EUR/month to over 30EUR/month... quite good argument to check some card with better power consumting. Thanks ATI.

"Notable also is that the GeForce GTX 295’s 896MB of memory per GPU isn’t enough to run the demanding settings we’ve chosen to try taxing these boards at 2560x1600" Why not give the card a fair chance and at least run the program with the -norestrictions command

Can't begin to describe how awesome this article is. Thanks for taking your time to write it, i'm thinking i'll pick up two 5850s now.
