I have no idea what the GTX 800s will be like and which will be competing with the R9 280x. Im buying new pc in couple of months (maybe April), so I just need to know should I wait or buy the 280x.

PS. Is there gonna be R9 300s? just wondering....

While the R9 280X is a good card, unless it's selling near it's targeted MSRP, I would not purchase. The price, at least in the US, is overly inflated. If you can find a GTX 770 selling for less than your prospective R9 280X, that would be a better buy, unless you plan to leverage the power of the GCN's compute units.

In Australia, 770 is more expensive than 280x, the closest prices is just $10 between them. which is Asus 280x Top and Gigabyte OC GTX 770.

I wouldn't wait for the 800 series, because:

1. This new generation will be really expensive

2. New generation doesn't mean better, take the GTX 690 and 750 as an example. With the money you could spend on a GTX 770 or a R9 280X you would barely buy a GTX 850 or something like this.

Get the R9 280X if it's cheaper. It is sometimes better than the GTX 770. The only problem is its not-that-good driver, but it's not something you can't handle.

According to the wikipedia page for the Maxwell generation (GTX 800 series) the cards are supposed to come out "Early 2014" Now tech companies are sort of notorious for saying "Soon" so much so people refer to it as their trade mark. We've already started to see roll outs on the mobile end of things, with companies like lenovo and alienware already packing their new laptops withe the 800m series. Normally that means that the desktop cards aren't far off. If you're really in need of a car then yes go ahead and buy a nice and shiny R9 270x or a GTX 760 or 770, whatever your heart desires.

as for the question about the Radeon cards, I can find no concrete evidence of them coming out with a "R9 3xx" series, however it is typical after a rebranding for these companies to come out with succeeding lines in such a fashion.

Basically a few years back nVidia did the same thing when they went from the Geforce GTX 9800 and dropped back to the GTX 200 series.

The suspected release dates on the successor to the R9 2XX series is sometime in 2015 and will be codenamed Pirate Island, as this current generation of AMD cards are based on an architecture codenamed Volcanic Island.

So the answer to "Should I buy it" is really up to you. You can wait it out a few more months and get a new card, and maybe save about 50$ in order to get better performance for less bank, (which would inevitably also drive the prices of the competing cards from AMD).
Patience == $$$
Sidenote, do some googling. It wasn't hard information to find, just looking up the GTX 800 series wiki page and it gives you the closest think you'll probably find to a release date. //RF

"Pirate Island"

i friggin lost it right there

R9 280x seems like its retailing about the same price as the GTX 770 with 4gb of ram. So for the performance boost you see in the 770 over the 280... I'm certainly leaning towards a 770 at the moment.

Remember: GPU memory doesn't really change much in the performance. A card won't become better than the other just because of some gigabytes.

to my understanding more GB on the single card is good for A) Higher resolutions like 14K and above. and B) for Crossfire, since you only get X amount of RAM from the first card (and non gets utilized from the second?) im unclear on that.

Still, you're most likely not using more than 2GB nowadays. Maybe in a few years you will, but then the GTX 770 and the R9 280X will be both obsolete and you'll be getting a better card, since a GPU usually lasts 4-5 years until it doesn't play anything on low settings.
