Hello people.
I want to buy a new video card. I wanted to buy a GeForce 2 GTS card, but the Radeon 32MB DDR is around $40 cheaper! Can anyone share his/her experience with these cards, or give some advice?
My computer is: Duron 700, Asus A7V, 128MB RAM.

Thanks.

I have owned a Radeon 32DDR for aprox 5 weeks.
SOYO SY6BA+IV, P3-800, and I am very pleased with it.
If you are in the USA I would suggest purchasing one from your local Best Buy on a credit card and trying it out. If you are not pleased then return it. Shelf price is aprox $200 with $50 mail in rebate. Last month there was a 20% Best Buy discount coupon on the Tribes website for computer gaming stuff. Good luck.

Regards,
Chas

Personally i would never touch another ATI product again. GeForce's are so much more stable and so much more hardware friendly. Nvidia has the money to make sure that their products work, and work well. ATI is a small company fighting to stay alive. Always buy something more mainstream and more popular. You will always have the hardware compatability as well as the software support. thats my personal view.

The radeon is good but the speed is slightly slower than the Geforce on stats but its whiz bang thing free up memory bandwidth making it exceed the Geforce

wats up with radiens clockspeed 166Mhz 183Mhz DDR OEM retail im confused if the 64 meg ddr model you want has 183 mhz I would buy it geforce has 166Mhz (ignore the wiz bang thing).

And for the bad drivers and stuff look at the 3D graphics forum wat do you notice? Geforce Problems flickering.
I rest my case get a radeon if its 183 Mhz definitly if its 166Mhz I still lean towards the Radeon.

GeForce cards are definitely higher performer superior to Radeon, but from what I've heard of Radeons yield better image quality compared to GeForces. Yes the performance would be slower by 20fps or something. but what is that when you could get 80fps+ with better image quality? Besides, ATI is not a small company struggling to stay alive. It has been established for >10 years and that is definitely longer then nVidia.

Smart guys are not smart; they only see things in different perspective.

It's probably also bigger than Nvidia. ATi owns the mobile graphics market, and has most of the OEMs in its pocket.

Well, firstlt you should read the posts in the graphics section. But my advice would be to stick with nVidia. The Radeon has got a much higher frame rate at bumb mapping but otherwise GF2 rules. nVidia provide good drivers (they also work in LINUX!!) and has a good history. The only problme is the prize so buy the one you can afford. Remember this though: It's better to pay more for a better brand than buying one with TV/Video out and a lesser frame rate. At least thats what I think.

I dont think there "fighting to stay alive" at all...
... because in just about every mac u see these days their
is an ATi Rage Pro

you are very mistaken about ATi. They are the largest OEM video card supplier in the world. They had a bad time with their Rage 128 and GL cards but every manufacturer has had a tough time at some point or another. NVidia is in my opinion an excellent vid card maker. Their backbone is their driver team. I'm glad to see that they think how I think about drivers being the key to a products' success. Really what good is a 2 gigatexel fill rate if the drivers are crap? NVidia is smart enought to realize that and they put out excellent drivers all the time. As far as the Radeon goes I went out and bought a GF2 MX by Hercules because of the faster RAM and their excellent product history, a cheapo VisionTek GF2, and a Radeon (I owned a Guillemot TNT2 which flew and a 3D Prophet DDR DVI which was awesome). I'm very happy with my choice on keeping the Radeon. The GF2 MX was fill rate limited and really struggled at higher resolutions. The GF2 was fast and overclocking it made it insane but I was less than impreessed with the performance to price ratio and the visual quality and huge performnce hits it took from bandwidth eating settings enabvled. Last I put in the Radeon and I believe that its incredible DVD playback, low price, and excellent visual quality make it a great buy. The Z-Buffer technology really shines in some of my Direct3D games. Another note I want to add is how well it overclocks. I can take it to 210/210 without any special cooling for OpenGL (a tiny tiny bit of snow every once in a while) and 189/189 in Direct3D like mad onion's 3dmark 2000. I recomend staying away from their drivers on the CD and using the beta drivers at www.3dfiles.com as they greatly improve the overclocking potential and the performance without any issues i've seen. Make sure you download and install DirectX 8 too because it gave me 600 more 3d marks in 3dmark 2000! It seems like all my DX games are running faster and smoother overall, wierd huh. If you buy a Radeon 32MB DDR from best buy and download power strip plus from www.tweakfiles.com and overclock it to 182/182 you get the same performance as with the 64MB version. Take it up to 189/189 and you see a good performance boost. The core was made to run at 200Mhz so the limiting factor is the RAM. This is a great card that gives you playable frame rates at up to 1600X1200 and good performance at up to 1280X1024 or 1152X864. The 2d desktop is easier on the eyes with my Radeon on my Silicon Graphics Sony Trinitron monitor than with the GF2 cards. I personally think that if ATi would get on the ball with drivers this card would perform much better.

I have a Radion 32MB DDR, Geforce256 DDR, Geforce 2 GTS, and all of the cards perform extreemly well. I am however a diehard overclocker, and can not recomend the Radion because I have had limited success w/ getting it to run at elevated AGP bus speeds. I bought the Radion to go into my son's PII Zeon System (2MB Cache running overclocked @600MHZ) but the system was not stable until I turned it down to 112/500 from 133/600. I ended up swaping my Geforce256 DDR and everything was stable. The Radion did work fine in my system (PIII 550 clocked to 733) because I am running a VIA chipset which allows the AGP to run in spec. at 133 FSB (and it runs great). However I can't recommend the Radion W/ out reservation because of the possible limitations to overclocking. Go w/ the GTS

I've been using ATI card a while ago... Now I'm in the NVIDIA camp again for two certain reasons. Linux X-Server availability is the major one. The other is the fact ATI drivers may become unstable when you try to run some particular VRML software I'm using. I still like ATI company and products a lot though :O) Oh well, hardcore gamers (I'm not one) will stick with GeForce anyways...

I would go with the radeon. Its fsaa is better then nvaida but there fill rate is low. If your going for image quality then radeon. if you want raw power geforce2.

Sorry but your personal view about ATI is very incorrect. ATI is one of the largest video chipset and card companies in the world. They are support buy the largest companys around the world ie: IBM Compaq, Toshiba -- and others in the dest top and mobile areas. They are still top of the earnings chart. As for support they are one of the best.
I would call that as mainsteam as they come.

I am Candian, but I speak only the truth!

I would personally go for the highend Gforce card becuase you will get that little bit more performance. But the ATI is still a great card and well supported.

Take care

If the difference is only $40.00, then I would definitley go with the Geforce 2 GTS. ATI is not very good with support or drivers. The Geforce beats the Radeon in every test and the only time the the Radeon even comes close to the Geforce is at higher resolutions than 1024x768. Even then the Geforce still beats it. ATI does some software tricks that allow it to do better at higher resolutions but you can only do so much with software.

Thanks to everyone who responded. My decision was to go with the ATI - even though I'm not going to use resolutions higher than 1024x768.
The price difference turned out to be closer to $90, which is quite a sum, and although I can afford the GTS, it doesn't mean I'm happy to pay money for a product I ultimately didn't really need. Besides that, my experience with nVidia and ATI actually is in favor of ATI: for some reason, my previous nVidia cards - RIVA 128 and TNT - were really hard to install, and took hours of searching the newsgroups, while the ATI card I had just loaded the drivers and worked right out of the box.
I hope that when I get my card it will be the same, and I'll post the results here.

Thanks!

I don't know where you heard that but ATI is a very big company and is often referred as the Canadian giant. It has been in business for a long time and is definitely not fighting to stay alive.

ok.. i'm pro ATI, i've had good experiences with both the all in wonder pro and all in wonder radeon- benchmarkwise, the radeon beats the gforce in 2d, but not in 3d- i don't know how the 32DDR version would work... umm.. yeah.

I am selling my Hercules GF2 32meg after several stability problems with various applications and games. Running the Radeon 32meg DDR w/ 700e oc --> 933mhz w/ 256K sdram on a p3v4x motherboard. The Radeon is stable and fast with striking colors. The setup and drivers seem top notch. I have used powerstrip to bump the clock up to 185 but have heard the board can go 200 no sweat. Very pleased with $150.00 well spent.

Go with the GeForce 2. Radeons are a great deal right now, but it seems ATI doesn't follow their cards and upgrade drivers as often as Nvidia. Believe me, this makes all the difference in the world. Take-Out (Good luck)

I think you're comparing the GeForce 2 DDR to the Radeon SDR. The Radeon SDR is a Radeon that has half the memory bandwidth from using single data rate memory. The GeForce 2 equivelent is the MX. Right now, you can pick up either a Radeon DDR or a GeForce 2 for a little over $150, just check www.pricewatch.com to find out where.
