If your motherboard or current RAID contoller doesn't support RAID 1 with a hot spare, then you are out of luck. You will need to purchase a contoller with that option if that is really what you want. RAID 1 isn't as cost effective as some other RAID types either.
That said, I see no need for RAID in a home setup. A good backup strategy would help you more in that case. Also, just so you understand, a RAID can lose 1 drive in an array(degraded state) and still function normally. Once the bad drive is replaced, the array will be rebuilt on the fly and will no longer be in a degraded state.
