Hi,
I have a Compaq Presario sr2010nx with mother board A8M2N-LA
or Naos-GL6 with BIOS 06/30/2006. The current operating system is Windows XP SP3.

I just purchased a AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+ Windsor CPU (ADA5200IAA6CS) to replace the Sempron 3400+ already installed in the machine because, it is my understanding, that I can simply put in the new CPU, apply thermal paste, and not have to flash the BIOS or get get a new fan or heat sink and the motherboard will recognize the new chip. Is this true?

The motherboard only has two slots for 240 pin, DDR2 SDRAM and HP states the max the computer can take is 2GB (2x1GB).

However, if I install the x2 5200+ CPU, can I use 2x2GB PC2-6400 ram chips? The 5200+ can support this type of ram but will the motherboard and Windows XP?

The computer also already has an integrated video card that I plan on disabling and replacing with a PCI-E video card after installing a 400w power supply.

tl;dr Can I replace Sempron 3400+ CPU with AMD x2 5200+ Windsor? If so, can I use pc2-6400 ram in each of the two ram slots in the machine?

I will share the following in case someone else stumbles upon this thread looking to upgrade their Compaq Presario sr2010nx.

I discovered that I have the Naos motherboard (it has only two memory slots). There are no BIOS updates for this motherboard. Anyone that is saying otherwise is using a BIOS update for a similar board but it 'ruins' the Naos board. If you try to update the BIOS from version 3.00 (06/30/2006) on the Naos board to one intended for a different motherboard you will have major issues like losing the use of the USB drives, card readers, on board video, drivers, etc. So, I advise just leaving your bios alone.

I installed the AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+ Windsor CPU (ADA5200IAA6CS) CPU in my machine without doing any 'updates' to the BIOS and it works great! It is totally compatible and is recognized by the BIOS. Windows XP Task Manager also shows that both cores are working.

DDR2 PC2-6400 800mhz functions just fine with the new CPU but the motherboard only allows 2gb of ram. I put a 2gb stick in each memory slot for a total of 4gb or ram but the machine won't boot in that case (I tested each memory stick in each memory slot individually so I know that each stick and slot is working). So, I only have a 2gb stick installed in one of the memory slots.

With the CPU and memory upgrade I can now watch 480p youtube videos without the video or audio lagging. Anything more than that will lag though. I will be installing a new power supply and 1gb video card soon (PCIe) so hopefully that will allow the computer to play 720p video without any issues.

So far, I have spent $21 on upgrades.
A new PSU is $22 shipped and a new video card is $37 shipped.
The total cost after upgrading the computer will be $80. Why would I spend so much on this useless boat anchor? Because it is a hobby and I can afford to blow $80 on it.
