I just bought a new Gateway E-2300 Series computer that I was going to try and put some money into for a better gaming experience (Money is tight and this is the best I could do) but when I went to Crucial.com to check the RAM compatibility it only suggested 1GB and 512MB for upgrades. Is there any way I could put in 4GB RAM instead or would it mess up the computer? I'm kind of new to computers and still learning so any answer could help me out.

Simple answer is it wouldn't work well if at all. Some chips would work but would only show 1GB available as the motherboard doesn't have the capability to recognize anything larger. Most likely it will not work. That being said you also have to worry about DDR v DDR2, v DDR 3 RAM which are different types of RAM. One will not fit into the socket of the other. If you were able to find a 4GB module that would fit in your motherboard, I would think it is safe to say it will not work the way you want it to.

Still you could probably put in 4 x 1GB and have a 4GB total which is enough to run most things at the low end.

You would barely be able to upgrade that system at all. I would recommend taking it back and letting the folks here compile a list of PC parts for you to purchase that will allow you to game way better. If you do not mind me asking, what is your budget?
