I have a z77x-D3H motherboard with 16 GB RAM. I would like to add another 16GB to upgrade to 32 GB but I don't know what type to get or whether to buy a set of 4x8gb. Currently, I have 2 open RAM slots out of 4.
Ideally....buy a new kit of 2 x 16 and use only 2 slots.
You can try buying a kit of 2 x 8 and adding those 2 sticks to the existing 2 sticks, but that might result in incompatibility or slower speeds than you'd like.

It looks like you are limited to 8GB per slot.
Shop for a 2x8GB KIT of the same ram you have now.
Make sure of the return policy just in case the new and old ram don't play nice together.
