Ram for Acer Aspire 5670

Ok I'm sorry if I repeat myself ....but what is the difference between the ram and the hard drive. ...and why would one need an external hard drive?

Ram is where data and programs are stored that you are actively using. Basically if you run a program it loads itself into RAM, and you work. Hard drive is where all your programs and data is permanently stored. An external hard drive is just to add more storage to save more stuff.
