Ram Up-gradation Clarification

I currently have 2 ram slots of my laptop occupied with 4Gb DDR3 ram.

I am planning to upgrade the same as I have 2 more ram slots free in my laptop.

I was planning to add 8GB more. I was wondering If I need to buy a single stick of 8Gb or 2 sticks of 4Gb.

Which one would be the better choice and why.

@Supahos: Thanks for replying. My laptop can accommodate up to 32gb of ram with each slot having a maximum capacity of 8gb.

Why did you point out that I cannot use 8gb sticks.

I didn't point out that it can't use 8gb sticks, I pointed out that without more information there is no way for me to know if it can or not. Still you don't want a single 8gb stick as it will run as single channel I would get two sticks no matter which size I went with if I were you.

What info is required to determine whether the laptop will be able to use 8gb sticks. If you can briefly explain, I will be able to give more info on this.

That laptop has to be able to, it can support 32gb of memory and has 4 slots, do the math If it had 4 slots and said it could support 16gb of memory it would have only worked with 4gb sticks. You're fine either way on the stick size question is do you want dual channel or not, and if you actually need 16 gb of memory I would suspect the dual channel part would be of great benefit to you.

In my case I have 2 slots occupied with 4gb ram each and have 2 slots free. I have 2 points that I need clarification on.

1) Will my laptop able able to accomodate a single stick of ram of capacity of 8gb as the third slot and the last slot empty.

2) If I purchase 2x8gb and add it to my 2x4gb will the dual channel memory mode still be persistent.

1) yes that should work, but it will not be in dual channel. However anytime you go to mixing memory on a computer (even more so on a computer you can't change memory settings in the bios) it may or may not work as advertised on the kit.

Yes you did mention the 32gb part which is why I said the 8gb sticks would be fine, however when I first made that point you hadn't told me the max capacity yet so I thought it wise to err on the side of caution.
