I have a asus 6850. It has 8gb of DDR3 memory. I was looking to upgrade the ram as I have the original sticks which are starting to fail. Is there a logical upgrade to say 16gb or will the motherboard run ram that is faster? I'm not sure what to look for

I'm so glad I saw your sig. I was about to mention you can't upgrade the GPU ram like that. The 6850 I know is a video card from ATI/AMD and might have been sold by Asus. Then I saw your sig. Whew.

You have an Asus CM6850-01 motherboard. How do you know the original sticks are failing? You could buy a new 2x8GB DDR3 set if you wanted to. I advise not however as that's money spent that won't carry over to a new build. Buy the ram if it's cheap and will get you going again. But if you can't find it cheap then I'd look into buying a new setup that supports DDR4.
