cpu- i7 4790k
graphics card- msi geforce gtx 970
ram- gskill ripjaws 8gb ram

In games I will be getting 60+ fps then it will drop down 20 fps when i look in another direction and when the fps drops my game freezes for about 1 second it started getting on my nerves so I checked my ram usage in the program msi afterburner and it was saying that I'm using 10000+mb of ram which is 10gb even though i only have 8gb I also checked task manager performance and it said I was using about 7gb of ram is that what is causes my games to freeze/stutter when fps drops?

Solution
Yep, most certainly so. What's happening most likely is that the system+game is using ALL 8GB of RAM, PLUS, 2GB of virtual ram on your hard drive/SSD. This will hurt performance tremendously as the HDD/SSD is several times slower than system RAM.

What games are you running, and are you running anything demanding while gaming? A standard game should not take 10GB of RAM.

Rust, H1Z1, ArmA 3, PlayerUnknowns Battlegrounds, Basically every game except older games like CSGO, CSS, L4D2. Programs I have running is discord, steam, msi afterburner and thats pretty much it.

It's rare to need more than 8GB though unless something's eating up your system memory.

Do you run a web browser when gaming? (if so, do NOT do that)

Something seems WRONG with the reported memory usage though as I don't think it includes the PAGEFILE (overrun) data but just what's in the physical memory.

*At this point, regardless of what the issue is I'd get another 8GB of memory. Ideally an IDENTICAL stick (or sticks). Find the model number and use pcpartpicker.

Or just SELL the memory if that doesn't work out and get a 2x8GB 2666MHz DDR4 kit.

Yeah I don't have any web browser running while gaming, that is what i will most likely do just buy 16gb ram i was planning on getting 16gb ram. Any suggestions for 16gb ram that is good for gaming?

There is no such thing as "gaming" memory. You just want system memory that is unlikely to be a bottleneck. Pretty much any kit in Dual Channel will be fine for all uses cases (not just gaming).

I would see about matching what you already have. If getting NEW then there's not much need to go above 1866 or 2133MHz CAS9 or CAS10.
