GPU - r7 265 Ever since I installed my new fx 8320 this morning, While I'm playing games I've noticed after around 5 minutes the framerate drops to hell from usually around 60fps straight to 20 and then after about 1 minute of that it goes back up to 60 and the cycle goes on. It's extremely annoying. I figured out with some testing of msi afterburner that every time the fps drops the GPU usage dropped aswell. I tested GTA 5, Battlefield 4 and Dragon Age: Inquisition and it happened on all of them, but it didn't seem to happen on Titanfall. Anyways, what could this be ?

Solution
CPU is choking at various points in the game engines. Faster CPUs will still be affected, but less dramatically. You could overclock your FX-8320 and tune your RAM and memory controller and it would help. Your graphics card may also have some headroom for core and VRAM overclock, and you can also tweak some driver and game settings.

But with my fx 4300 this wouldn't happen, the fps would just stay at an average of 45. I already overclocked to 4.0ghz and it happens less frequently but still way to much to ignore, Is there anything else I can do to fix this ?

My psu is a cx 750w and my motherboard is an msi 760GM-P23 because I bought this as a prebuilt cyberpowerpc because I didn't know anything about pc's at the time and thought that was the right choice.

Also I have a hyper 313 evo so overclocking isn't really a problem, I'll push it to 4.5 and see if that makes a diffrence

I don't have 3dmark so I tried prime95 and the frequency would be at 4.3ghz making a bit of a sssss sound then it would drop to 1.2ghz then back so on. The 4th core stopped working after a minute, the 8th immediately and the 7th after about 5 minutes. then after 10 minutes, my monitor went black even though it wasn't off and wouldn't come back. My mobo is a msi 760GM-P23 and I didn't reinstall windows

Both are very poor quality. They are so poor that they could be dangerous. I would reduce your overclocks to stock speed and re-enable all power saving features. It's typical of cyberpowerpc to strongly advertise one or two aspects of a product like the CPU and graphics card, and try and bury information about important things like PSU and motherboard. You already bought it, so I feel your pain.

Yes, I was a fool at the time, It's been about a year and a half since then and i'm thinking of trying to sell the 8320 for 100$, that way it's not a total waste of 200$ and buy a new mobo with an i5 with the money I was going to buy the gtx 970 with, I can buy one later. Does that sound like a good plan ? or is the psu still too sketchy ? also what motherboard would you suggest that's fairly cheap and well made

I personally would not keep that CX. You should be able to sell it though. The unwary ebay/craigslist buyer will just focus on the wattage and Corsair sticker 😛

I just started a list of the good PSUs that are often on sale. Pardon the work in progress:

This XFX unit (built by Seasonic) goes on discount about once/month. The only drawback is that it is non-modular. But for $26, most people can excuse that.

As far as the plan to sell off what you can and start a new platform, that's a good idea. It may take some time, but time is almost always on your side when it comes to building, since things keep getting cheaper and faster.

Thanks a ton man you've been a huge help

No problem. The other option is to keep the FX-8320 since it can be fun to overclock. But you would need a pricier motherboard and cooling solution - which bursts the myth that AMD processors are actually cheaper. I do have a lot of fun overclocking them though.

sorry but you think it would be worth it to just buy a new am3 motherboard instead of buying an i5 processor with a new motherboard ? Because I don't have that much cash to spend and I couldn't buy a new psu/mobo/cpu but I could do psu/mobo but do you think buying a new motherboard will fix this issue ?

Just laying a couple options out there. Even if you OC that FX-8320 to 4.5GHz, the stock i3 will still perform better in most games. If you can get a good price for selling the 8320, then I would strongly consider the Xeon (basically a Haswell i7 with no IGPU). It certainly is fun to play with overclocking AMD, but it's not for everyone. I'd be pushing for 5GHz 😛

I think I'll do that second one with a 4460

Which temperature is the 8320 at, when its frequency drops?

Are you sure it´s the cx750 and not the cx750M (modular)?

in your case the first thing I would do: a fresh install of windows at stock clock settings, try the games again and if it´s not working, get a better AMD board.

You can hold on to your hyper 212 evo CPU cooler in any configuration.

If buying a new rig and consider a GTX970, I would get an i5-4690

An i7 or xeon would get 2fps more
