I posted this problem almost a year ago and was unable to get any results so I've just went with the problem for a year and it still happens occasionally. Any help would be appreciated.

My problem is that my internet occasionally drops and by occasionally it could be every 5 minutes or every 5 hours the only reliable thing is that is will happen it's just a matter of when.

I have New Wave for a ISP which was formerly Avenue broadband and before that Charter. I should be getting 15MB down and 1.5MB up, generally when I do a speed test I get about that and sometimes I don't which is frustrating.

I'm not a big IT guru but I'll give as much information as I can, I'm hooked up through a ethernet cable from the modem which is a Arris model-TM602G, which also runs cables to a D-Link switch model Des1024D using a Tandy power switch system. And a Cisco Linksys E2500 wireless router. All together there is a maximum of 6 computers that could possibly be connected at once, but generally only averaging 1-3 at one time but generally 2.

Hi there let me take a stab and thanks for all the information. We need to quantify the issues...

First in case you are unaware, you can't run MB (MegaBytes) per second, unless you were VISA, WalMart, Bank of America, etc. Normal speeds are in Mega bits (yes the lower case means different). A Byte of information is 8 bits of information bundled together and using it, so basically think of it like if I charged you 1 dollar (bit) for something and you gave me 8 dollars (Byte) it be two different things. So when someone is running at 15Mbps, that is 15,000,000 bits of information, not 15MBps (which is 8x15,000,000 or 120,000,000bits of information) which you can see is alot more speed.

Secondly, if you properly read your Terms Of Service (TOS) paperwork you signed to get the service, Cable Internet provides UP TO (very key phrase) 15Mb down and 1.5Mb up speed. That means, like a highway, you can go from 1 mile an hour (1bps) to 15M miles an hour (15Mbps) not that you always go as FAST as 15M every times you 'get on the highway' (think of rush hour traffic or holiday traffic times how 'slow' things are, YES also is the same time / way with your service provider).

So this will answer why things 'slow down' as your mentioning. You need to expect it during holiday weekends when 'all the kids are home' or such and they are all wanting to watch youtube videos and so on.

Now for the dropping, I think we need to isolate 'what' is dropping, where, and how do you determin it is 'dropping'.

So first what do you perceive as 'dropping' the internet?

Is it that your videos stop playing and you try F5/Refresh the page and you get 'page cannot be found' or what?

Secondly, does this ONLY happen to that one computer?

Does it happen to ALL computers connected to the D-link ONLY?

Is the Cisco plugged into the Arris or to the D-Link?

Does the CISCO wireless computers ever 'drop' the internet in the middle of use?

I am guessing your personal computer is wired computer into the Dlink drops internet correct??

If you wired your computer into ONLY the modem and tried for a lengthy time period do you ever experiance these 'dropping internet' issues?

Based on these answered we can look into more of the cause / culprits.
