Looking in task manager it says that I am using 4gb of my 16gb and the only application that is open is task manager. were is my ram going and how do I get it back?

Solution
a portion of memory gets cached by several processes in windows

in order to see a breakdown, in task manager open the processes tab (details in win 8)

If there is a tick box 'show processes for all users' then tick it

click on the memory column header to sort the highest value at the top

that basically gives you a list of all running processes and how much memory they are using
