I'm trying to upgrade from a Core i3-530 to a Core i7-870 and get a rapid beeping sound on startup. It's almost the same beep as when my RAM is unseated, but about twice as fast. Re-installing the old CPU, everything works fine.

I've got a P55-UD3 mobo, 600w power supply, 4 Gb of RAM and a GTX 650 video card installed.

Any ideas what could be causing the issue?

I appear to have an Award BIOS. The above page calls it a "RAM Problem" (which I've double-checked and is working fine with the other processor) and http://pcsupport.about.com/od/fixtheproblem/tp/award-beep-codes.htm reads like possibly a CPU overheat.

Download and use memtest to check the ram.

Without you posting a detailed build I don't even know what exact ram you have.

Your mobo spec says -
4 x 1.5V DDR3 DIMM sockets supporting up to 16 GB of system memory
Dual channel memory architecture
Support for DDR3 2200/1600/1333/1066/800 MHz memory modules
Support for non-ECC memory modules
Support for Extreme Memory Profile (XMP) memory modules
Go to GIGABYTE's website for the latest memory support list.

Problem solved!

After talking with Gigabyte support to be absolutely certain on compatibility, I found out that slotting my RAM in two blue slots on the motherboard gave an error, while using the two white ones did not. Why this didn't happen with the i3, I have no idea, but I am now the proud owner of a shiny new Core i7-870!

I may or may not also have a couple of bent pins in the CPU socket, but they haven't presented any problems yet. Thanks for all the help!
